2014 State of the Sport - Part IV: Largest Road Races

MINNEAPOLIS, Mn. - (August 27, 2014) - The tremendous growth in the popularity of competitive distance running for fitness and health over the last 13 years is further illustrated by the results of Running USA's latest State of the Sport Report.

A comprehensive analysis of finisher totals at the nation's Largest Road Races, the report analyzes available finisher data for 2013. Fueled by the tremendous popularity of the half-marathon distance, the data shows that participation in the nation's largest road races grew 73 percent over 13 years, quantifying running's exponential growth as a recreational sport and fitness regimen.

"This year's Largest Road Race totals are no surprise to those who have followed the Second Running Boom since its early days," said Rich Harshbarger, Running USA CEO. "Each year, more Americans are inspired to take up running for health and wellness, and they have a wide selection of exciting race events to choose from."

The number of U.S. race finishers has increased nearly 300% since 1990, and female representation has grown from just 25% to an all-time high of 57% in 2013, according to Part III of the State of the Sport series.

Frank Shorter Returns to Indy for Mini Commitment Day Run

INDIANAPOLIS - The 500 Festival kicks off the excitement for the 2015 OneAmerica Mini-Marathon as registration opens on Tuesday, September 9 as part of Mini Commitment Day. Olympic gold medalist Frank Shorter, winner of the inaugural Mini-Marathon in 1977, will run the famed Mini route beginning at 9 a.m. and ending at Military Park.

Shorter, who won Olympic gold in the marathon at the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich, Germany, won the first Mini-Marathon with a time of 1:03:56. Now age 68, Shorter anticipates finishing the course in approximately two hours and ten minutes, a pace faster than 16,000 participants in the 2014 race. As he sets the pace to beat on September 9, the 500 Festival will donate $1 to a charity as voted on by Mini participants for every person who runs faster than Shorter in May 2015.

It was curiosity and the opportunity to run on the Indianapolis Motor Speedway that first led Shorter to commit to run the first Mini-Marathon. "The Mini-Marathon has become such a tradition," says Shorter. "It has evolved into an event people plan to be in Indianapolis for. Families come back to do this. It's sort of a reunion race. I am excited to make the commitment to run the course again and encourage others to commit to run in 2015."

The Marine Corps Marathon Introduces 2014 Course
QUANTICO, Va. - The Marine Corps Marathon (MCM) is introducing the 2014 Marathon course and online interactive map for the 39th running of the event on Sunday, Oct. 26. The 26.2 mile journey will begin in Arlington, VA and travel along spectacular National Park landscape throughout the nation's capital to the finish on the Marine Corps War Memorial in Rosslyn, VA. The dynamic online map, created in partnership with Bethesda, MD-based web software and interactive services firm, Geocentric, is accessible on the MCM website (www.marinemarathon.com).

Runners will take note of limited changes to the 2014 course including the introduction of an even greater view of the US Capitol as this year's course now turns them from Pennsylvania Avenue onto 1st Street Northwest, just below the grand dome along Mile 19. A second change occurs over the final portion of the course along Mile 23 in Crystal City, with a new up-and-back run along 12th Street South, as it becomes Crystal Drive. Runners are sure to enjoy plenty of motivation along this portion of the course as the Crystal City Family Festival is hosted in the streets. The final change is the eastern approach to the Pentagon from the newly developed Long Bridge Drive.

The 2014 MCM course will again boast the beautifully tree-lined route along Rock Creek and Potomac Parkway, reintroduced in 2013. This scenic area of the route over miles 6 to 9 remains on the National Register of Historic Places.

Defending Champions Return to the 2014 TCS New York City Marathon

NEW YORK - Reigning New York City Marathon champions Geoffrey Mutai and Priscah Jeptoo, both of

Kenya, will defend their titles against all-star professional fields at the 2014 TCS New York City Marathon on Sunday, November 2, 2014, it was announced by Mary Wittenberg, president and CEO of New York Road Runners.

In last year's race, Mutai outran the men's field to win by nearly a minute in 2 hours, 8 minutes, 24 seconds, and Jeptoo came from more than a half-mile behind to take the lead in the race's final three miles and win in a time of 2:25:07.

"With Geoffrey and Priscah headlining the 2014 TCS New York City Marathon, we welcome back two great champions to the streets of New York City," said Wittenberg. "Last year, as they led 50,000 runners in the largest marathon ever, both Geoffrey and Priscah were inspirations to us all. This November, when they line up in Staten Island to start their journey through the unique neighborhoods of the City's five boroughs, these world-class athletes will be chasing history, as Geoffrey goes for a New York hat trick and Priscah looks to join an elite group of repeat winners."

Mutai, 32, is the course record holder (2:05:06) and two-time defending champion of the New York City Marathon. He ran the fastest marathon of all time (2:03:02) to win the 2011 Boston Marathon; however, the course is ineligible for world records due to its net drop in elevation and point-to-point layout. In 2012, Mutai, the reigning NYC Half 2014 champion, captured the 2011-2012 World Major Marathon series title with victories at three of the six World Marathon Majors races-Boston (2011), New York (2011), and Berlin (2012).
