Young Collegiate Stars to Compete at USA Junior Championships this Weekend
July 3, 2014

NEW ORLEANS – National titles and the opportunity to represent the United States on the world stage are at stake this weekend for more than 300 young collegians competing at the two-day U.S. Outdoor Junior Championships in Eugene, Ore., beginning Saturday, July 5.

As many as 170 collegiate men and 137 collegiate women are among the 600 young athletes between the ages of 16 and 19 at Historic Hayward Field who will be vying for individual titles and potential berths onto Team USA for the 2014 IAAF World Junior Championships – also to be contested in Eugene from July 22-27.

The full list of entries can be found here, which, in addition to today's up-and-coming collegiate contenders, includes many of the potential future collegiate stars of tomorrow. Case in point: Six Americans who won individual NCAA titles this year either indoors or outdoors competed at the 2012 U.S. Junior Championships and ultimately the World Junior Championships in Barcelona, Spain.

USATF.tv will stream the meet live online beginning with the first running event of each day. Saturday's broadcast begins at 5:50 p.m. ET and Sunday's at 5:45 p.m. ET

Given they've met the qualifying standards, the two highest-finishing athletes in each of the individual events this weekend will earn a spot on Team USA for the 2014 edition of the World Junior Championships.

Those finishing outside the top two will still be in consideration for the relay pool – and with the caliber of competition set for this weekend, multiple athletes ranked among the top 10 in the world could be among those on the outside looking in.

Success at the U.S. Junior Championships and qualification to Worlds would be more feathers in the caps of a handful of collegians who have already established themselves as not only among the best in the nation, but the best in the world.

Five first-year collegians are ranked No. 1 in the world in their respective events by the IAAF, with nine others ranked in the top five – including some in the same event.

NCAA Division I Outdoor men's 100 meters champion Trayvon Bromell of Baylor figures to be one of the headliners of the meet after winning NCAAs in a World-Junior-Record 9.97. He became the first teenager in the history of the world to dip below 10 seconds under wind-legal conditions.

Four of the five fastest wind-legal times on the 2014 World Junior descending order list have Bromell's name next to them.

Georgia's Kendell Williams made her mark on the world and collegiate scenes with World Junior and collegiate records in the indoor pentathlon and a U.S. Junior Record outdoors in the heptathlon – both events in which she claimed NCAA titles.

This weekend, however, she will compete exclusively in the 100-meter hurdles, an event in which she ran a 12.99 during the NCAA heptathlon to move to the 2014 World Junior lead and the No. 9 spot in World Junior history.

A teenage woman was also center stage in the open 400-meter hurdles as Texas A&M's Shamier Little won the NCAA title in the event in 55.07 for the 2014 World Junior lead and the No. 2 spot on the U.S. Junior all-time performers list. She has run each of the six fastest times in the world amongst juniors in 2014.

Though Texas' Kendall Baisden didn't claim an individual NCAA title of her own at 400 meters – she was third – the first-year collegian did play a crucial part on the Longhorns' meet-record 4x400 relay team's victory.

She is, however, the 2014 World Junior leader at 400 meters in 50.46 with five of the eight best times on the 2014 World Junior descending order list and the No. 2 spot on the all-time U.S. Junior list.

She will have her work cut out for her as three other collegians rank among the world's top 10 in the event: No. 3 Shakima Wimbley of Miami (Fla.), No. 7 Felicia Majors of Tennessee and No. 8 Aaliyah Barnes of Ohio State.

Also currently sitting at No. 1 in the world among teenage women is discus thrower Valarie Allman of Stanford, whose mark of 167-10 (51.17m) also ranks her No. 6 on the all-time U.S. Junior list.

Bromell's teammate Tim Holmes of Baylor is No. 2 in the world in the 400-meter hurdles at 45.36, and has three of the world's four fastest times by juniors in 2014. Among those challenging him for the win will be a pair of worldwide top-11 competitors in No. 8 Desmond Palmer of Pittsburgh and No. 11 Khallifah Rosser of Chaffey College.

Michael Cherry, Jr,. of Florida State, ranked No. 2 in the world among juniors at 400 meters with three of the seven fastest times, will head a field that includes a pair of collegians tied at No. 5 on the world list in Eastern Michigan's Tyler Brown and Ohio State's Lamar Bruton, as well as 10th-ranked Byron Robinson of Penn State.

Also No. 2 in the world is Iowa's Brittany Brown at 200 meters in 22.95.
