STANFORD ATHLETES FINISH IN WORLD TOP THREE



Allman second, Baker third at IAAF World Juniors



EUGENE, Ore. – Valarie Allman placed second in the discus and Olivia Baker was third in the 400 meters, giving Stanford women’s track and field a pair of top-three finishes at the IAAF World Junior Championships on Friday night at Hayward Field for athletes 19 and under.



Allman, the U.S. junior champion and a rising sophomore, unleashed a throw of 186 feet, 2 inches on her first attempt, which stood as the best of her six. Brazil’s Izabela Da Silva captured the title with a distance of 190-4.



Baker, an incoming freshman, ran 53.00, with U.S. teammate Kendall Baisden winning in 51.85 and Cuba’s Gilda Casanova second (52.59). Baker will shoot for another medal in the 4x400 relay, which begins with a first-round heat Saturday.



Two Stanford incoming freshmen advanced to the finals of the women’s 1,500. Elise Cranny ran 4:15.21 to earn the fourth and final automatic qualifying spot from the second section. Austalia’s Anna Laman advanced on time, in 4:18.89.



Overall, Cranny had the fourth-fastest time and Laman the 12th. They will compete in the final on Sunday at 3:55 p.m.
