Three-Time Champion David Torrence Added to Medtronic TC 1 Mile
ST. PAUL, Minn. - Three-time Medtro nic TC 1 Mile champion
David Torrence of Oakland, Calif. will return to Minneapolis for the 10th anniversary event on Thursday. Torrence (right), the first runner to break four minutes on the Nicollet Mall course, is a late addition to the race, event organizer Twin Cities In Motion announced.
Men's and women's professional fields are now set for the races which take place in the glow of Tuesday's 60th anniversary celebration of Roger Bannister's first-ever sub-four-minute mile in 1954. In all, 22 men and 13 women will race in the event's pro athlete waves which culminate an evening of racing where more than 3,000 runners will compete over one of the sport's signature distances.
Torrence won the first of three Medtronic TC 1 Mile crowns in 2009, when the prize money and course record bonus he earned helped to keep his fledgling running career aloft. He defended his title the following year and, in 2011, bettered his own course record en route to an unprecedented third straight victory.
