Division III Outdoor T&F All-Americans Highlighted by Team Winners Mount Union Men and Wartburg Women
May 27, 2014

NEW ORLEANS – The U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) announced Tuesday the list of those Division III student-athletes who earned USTFCCCA All-America honors for the 2014 outdoor track & field season.

Student-athletes were honored for their performances at the NCAA Division III Outdoor Track & Field Championships this past weekend in Delaware, Ohio. Those who finished in the top eight in their events at the championships earned the honor, so long as their teams are members of the USTFCCCA.

The full men’s list can be found here, and the full women’s list here.

The national champion Wartburg women and Mount Union men led all teams in total All-America honors with 16 and 14, respectively.

Leading the way for three-time defending champion Wartburg were 200 meters champion Libby Schubert and hurdler Tashina McAllister with four All-America certificates apiece. The duo were two of the three women to earn four All-America honors this year, joining Ashante Little of Wheaton (Mass.).

Six more women earned three honors apiece, including three-time champion Christy Cazzola of UW-Oshkosh (800, 1500, 5000) in leading her team to a runner-up finish. Other national champions who earned three awards each were Mallory Burnham of St. Thomas (Minn.) (100H), Lexie Sondgeroth of UW-Whitewater (400 meters) and Naomi Bates of Amherst (long jump).

Jessika Smith of UW-Stout and Shelby Mahr of UW-Whitewater also earned three apiece.

The Wartburg women’s 16 awards were more than UW-La Crosse’s 12 and Wheaton’s (Mass.) 11.

Of the five men who earned three honors each, three came from Mount Union en route to winning its first team title in program history. Sean Donnelly won the shot put and the hammer throw to lead the way, followed by teammates Tyler Mettille and Chase Swisher.

Chancise Watkins of La Verne and Bruce Gray of Greenville also collected three awards each.

Mount Union collected 14 All-America accolades in all, better than the 11 earned by UW-Oshkosh and the 10 by both runner-up UW-La Crosse and Augustana (Ill.).

Though the conference didn’t claim either national team title, the WIAC earned the most awards on both the women’s and men’s sides with 42 and 40, respectively. The IIAC – featuring Wartburg – was next on the women’s list with 20 in a tie with the NEWMAC, while the CCIW edged out the OAC for the second spot in the men’s competition, 22-21.
