Rite Aid Cleveland Marathon Records Fastest Marathon Times in 13 Years

CLEVELAND (May 18, 2014) - The 2014 Rite Aid Cleveland Marathon saw the fastest finish time in the last 13 years on its new and well-received full marathon course as more than 20,000 runners converged at the start line for today's race.

Philip Lagat of Kenya won the men's marathon with a time 2 hours, 12 minutes, 39 seconds, while
Sarah Kiptoo of Kenya won the women's marathon for the second year in a row, running the course in 2:34:58. The drastic course makeover, which ran predominately on the west side of the city, earned praise from runners and fans.

Lagat isn't new to the city of Cleveland, as he won the men's 10K race in 2010. He pulled away from fellow countryman Eliud Too with just a few miles remaining

after a close race for most of the way.The 37th event included a 10K, half-marathon and full marathon on Sunday and

a 5K and Kids' Run events on Saturday

.

Race Director Jack Staph said: "Today's race was exceptional on many levels and marked a great day for Cleveland. The new course drew an unprecedented amount of fans throughout nearly every mile of the course. The support we received from the residents and officials in Rocky River, Lakewood, Tremont and Ohio City was wonderful. They welcomed our participants with open arms."

Portland Locals Griffiths, Dimoff Win Rock 'n' Roll Portland

PORTLAND, Ore. (May 18, 2014) - Local runners made good on Sunday as the third Rock 'n' Roll Portland Half Marathon returned. In true Portland fashion, a cool morning drizzle led to alternating periods of sunny skies and rainy downpour as the last of the more than 10,000 entrants finished.

Jason Griffiths of nearby Hubbard, Oregon broke away from a lead pack of three around the 8 mile mark and never looked back as he cruised to a runaway victory in 1 hour 8 minutes and 45 seconds. Paul Rottich of Beaverton was a distant second almost a minute behind.

Women's champion Carrie Dimoff of Portland needed to dig down deep in the closing miles and steps to hold off the fast closing Danish Olympian Jess Drasbau Peterssen. Dimoff won in 1:14:41 with Peterssen five seconds back.

Top Locals Break Through in Brooklyn

NEW YORK (May 17, 2014) - In only her third half-marathon, Liz Costello of the (NYAC) scored a hat trick: She won the 2014 Brooklyn Half Marathon, set a personal best of 1 hour, 13 minutes, 29 seconds, and qualified for the 2016 U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials.

Costello, 26, who was second in last year's Brooklyn Half behind New Zealand Olympian Kim Smith, improved by more than a minute this year to run comfortably under the sub-1:15:00 Trials qualifying time. Second place went to Hirut Damte of Agony o'de Feet (AODF), who ran 1:13:46. Tina Muir of Philadelphia was third in 1:14:29.

Yonas Mebrahtu, 26, also of WSX, had raced both the UAE Healthy Kidney 10K and the Japan Run 4-Mile on the previous weekend and strained his right hamstring in the process. Near the seven-mile mark on Ocean Parkway, Mebrahtu and WSX teammate Ayele Feisa pulled away from a pack of eight. As they approached the finish, Mebrahtu was nervous.

"I worried about sprinting, with the injury," he would say. "I hadn't run at all since last weekend-just ice and painkillers." But he took the risk-and pulled away on the Boardwalk to win in 1:04:23. Feisa (1:04:30) and Birhanu Kemal (1:05:00) completed a WSX podium sweep.

"Never in the history of running in San Diego has there been such a titanic clash of current major champions - men or women - and this race certainly continues the rich tradition of world class running at the original Rock 'n' Roll Marathon Series event," said
Tracy Sundlun, SVP of CGI and co-founder of the Rock 'n' Roll Marathon Series. "The women's elite field reflects our continued commitment to showcasing the world's top professional runners in premier races."

Since winning in San Diego last year, Kiplagat, 34, has continued to reign as one of the world's greatest distance runners.
