American Women Look to Retake Podium at Freihofer's Run for Women 5K
ALBANY, NY- It has been a decade since the last American woman (Marla Runyan) won this IAAF silver-labeled 5K crown in Albany, N.Y.

Looking to break that lengthy drought at the 36th Freihofer's Run for Women on Saturday, May 31 is a cadre of talented U.S. distance runners with a point to prove. These ladies will not only be battling their elite international counterparts for pride, but also for more than $28,500 in cash prizes, including $10,000 reserved for the first woman to cross the finish line at the Empire State Plaza.

With a 5K road PB of 15:30, Amy Van Alstine (Flagstaff, Ariz.),

24, is a definite contender who is peaking at just the right time. The University of Richmond graduate, who trains with the newly created Northern Arizona Elite Club, won the 8K U.S. Cross-Country Championships in February in Boulder, Colo. (27:34) against a talented field that featured two-time world championships 1,500m medalist Jenny Simpson. The adidas-sponsored athlete also notched a second place finish at Stanford's Payton Jordan Invitational 5,000 (15:23) and was the second American at the recent Carlsbad 5000, an event recognized for fast times and world records.

"Amy had a terrific year in 2013 and proved she is among the very top American distance runners," said Event Director
George Regan. "Last year she was our top American and placed 4th with a time of 16:01. We know she'll be looking for an even stronger finish in 2014."

Big Sur International Marathon Announces New Registration Plans

MONTEREY, Calif. - The popularity of the Big Sur International Marathon, held on the last Sunday each April, has caused race organizers to retool its registration system for the 2015 event and beyond. The "bucket list" marathon sold out in a record 59 minutes last year.

"While we were honored by the strong demand last year, it was clear that a single first-come, first-served registration period could be unfair to those who were unable to be online at the right time," said race director Doug Thurston. "For the 30th annual Big Sur International Marathon on April 26, 2015
, we are offering a new plan which we feel will allow more flexibility for people's time schedules. "

The marathon is providing four different opportunities for 625 entries each on different days and times followed by a lottery for additional entries. Registration will open on July 15, at 10 a.m. Pacific Daylight Time (PDT). The second period is Saturday, July 19 at 11 a.m. PDT; the third is Wednesday, July 23 at 5 p.m. PDT; and the final period Sunday, July 27 at 4 p.m. PDT.

Finally, a small lottery for 500 regular marathon slots will be offered for runners who may not have been successful in obtaining a registration in the four attempts. The lottery will be open between July 29 and August 6, with applicants being notified on August 11. All lottery applicants will pay a small, non-refundable lottery processing fee.

Select Staffing Santa Barbara Marathon & Half Announces New Elite Rehab Team Competition

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - The Select Staffing Santa Barbara Veterans Day Marathon & Half has announced a new Elite Rehab Team Competition inviting military teams of five and corporate or open teams of three to "leave no person behind". In a unique format amongst road races, teams will have to finish no more than 13.1 seconds apart from each other in the Half Marathon and 26.2 seconds apart from each other in the Marathon.

The first 100 teams to register will enjoy 15% off team registration. Teams may use code TEAM100 to receive the discount at checkout.

"Whether it is raising money for their favorite charity or running alongside their friends and family en route to crossing the finish line with their hands held high, many runners participate to not only get fit, but to do something greater than themselves," commented race director Rusty Snow. "We look forward to seeing our military, corporate and open teams truly working together in completing their collective journeys from the orchards of Goleta to the beautiful waterfront finish in downtown Santa Barbara."
