One of Adrian Sherrod’s greatest desires in this, his senior season, was to wrestle the NCAA West Regional Championship back from Alaska Anchorage. Yo Adrian, you did it! Sherrod sailed to a second-place finish at Saturday’s NCAA West Regional Championships in Oahu, Hawaii, leading the Wildcats to a dominating victory.
This week’s Chico State Athletics Wildcat of the Week shined brightly on the sun-bathed 10-kilometer course, crossing the finish line in 32:02, heading a 2-3-4 Chico State finish that essentially sealed the deal on Chico State’s ninth regional title in the past 11 years.
Sherrod had yet to be part of a regional championship celebration, however. The senior from Spring Valley just missed out on a spot on the regional roster as a freshman and then endured consecutive close losses to Alaska Anchorage by a combined seven points over the past two seasons.
He ran arguably the second biggest cross country race of his life Saturday to exact a little revenge for himself and the third-ranked Wildcats.
Sherrod’s biggest race to date was probably his 19th-place finish at last season’s NCAA Championships. He’s hoping to move that performance, and Saturday’s, back a spot when he runs his final collegiate cross country race at the NCAA Championships in Joplin, Mo., on Nov. 17.
