McKeeman, Mashkantceva Win 19th Philadelphia Marathon

Mashkantceva sets women's marathon course record; Kedikou and Demissie top both half-marathon and Rothman Institute 8K races

PHILADELPHIA (November 18, 2012) - The 19th running of the Philadelphia Marathon included multiple course records at all race distances - in the marathon, half-marathon, and Saturday's 8K.

Sunday highlights included women's champion Irina Mashkantceva (right), breaking Mariska Kramer's 2011 course record. Mashkantceva, with a time of 2 hours, 35 minutes, 35 seconds, goes into the Philadelphia Marathon record books in her first marathon on U.S. soil.

In the men's division, local favorite Mike McKeeman was the clear winner, outpacing the second place finisher, Scott MacPherson, by 42 seconds. MacPherson took second in his first-ever marathon competition. McKeeman, with a winning time of 2:17:51, runs locally with Bryn Mawr Running Club, and does most of his training in Philadelphia.

"It is so special to win this marathon in my hometown," said Mike McKeeman (left). "Knowing every inch of the course helped but what really spurred me to a victory was the crowd which was full of my friends and family."

Mashkantceva, of Russia, spoke through an interpreter about her experience today. "I trained specifically for Philadelphia because I heard about it being a great course. It's true, I loved the course and the many cheering fans helped make my first marathon in the U.S. so special," she said.

At the top of the Half Marathon podium were repeat winners from Saturday's Rothman 8K: Kenyan Isaac Korir Kedikou in the men's division and Misiker Mekonnin Demissie in the women's division. Demissie's 1:11:57 broke the course record of 1:12:42 set by Margaret Kare in 2006.

Samuel Ndereba of Royersford, Penn., placed second in the Men's 8K on Saturday, followed by a second place finish in the men's Half Marathon. Ndereba is no stranger to the Philadelphia Marathon, having won both the Men's 8K and Half Marathon races in 2011.

Two hometown favorites won their Masters Division - Rachid Bensalem, 40, of Philadelphia took the Men's Masters Marathon with a time of 2:28:06. Doreen McCoubrie, 51, of Malvern, Penn. won the Women's Masters Division in the Half Marathon with a time of 1:23:22.

The Rothman Institute 8K kicked off the first of four races of Philadelphia Marathon Race Weekend with a new course record in the men's field set by Kedikou, 25, with a time of 22:29 seconds.

Kedikou (below right) broke the record of 23:03 set by Marcus O'Sullivan set in 1997. The 8K was Kedikou's debut race on American soil.

Demissie, 24, took the 8K crown in 25:46. A talented marathoner from Ethiopia who lives and trains in the U.S., had originally planned to run in the ING New York City Marathon prior to its cancellation earlier this month.

More than 2,500 runners were registered for the largest-ever field of the Rothman Institute 8K (4.97 miles). Runners started on the Benjamin Franklin Parkway, near the Philadelphia Museum of Art before they took a turn on the scenic banks of the Schuylkill River and Kelly Drive.

Lizano, Matthews Win St. Jude Latin Music Miami Beach Half Marathon

Alexis Y Fido Headline Finish Line concert on the Sand in South Beach

MIAMI BEACH, Fla. - (November 18, 2012) - The sands and the sounds of South Beach made for an exhilarating finish line as thousands of runners took part in the St. Jude Latin Music Miami Beach Half Marathon. The race started on iconic Ocean Drive and finished on the sand in Lummus Park, with live bands entertaining runners every mile of the scenic 13.1-mile course.

Costa Rican Olympian Cesar Lizano executed his race plan to perfection, winning the men's race in dominant fashion this morning in 1 hour, 7 minutes, 46 seconds. Lizano was Costa Rica's lone marathon representative at the 2012 London Olympics, where he finished 65th overall in challenging conditions. The Miami race was the first step toward his goal of qualifying for the 2013 IAAF World Championships next August in Moscow, which he hopes to attain at the Chevron Houston Marathon in January.

"My goal was to come here and run between 1:07 and 1:08, and I'm happy with the results," said Lizano (left, MarathonFoto), 30, who will look to run a faster time in two weeks at the Zappos.com Rock 'n' Roll Las Vegas Half Marathon. "The first half of the race was challenging running alone into the wind, but the second half was great. To see the city, cruise ships and water views the second half of the race and to have the finish line on the beach was special. I'm already looking forward to competing in Las Vegas and running a faster time."

Virginia's Richard Morris took second with a time of 1:11:48 and Chris Carrier of New York (1:13:28) finished third.

In the women's race, 28-year-old Angela Matthews of Michigan found herself atop the podium in her second year running the race. Matthews came up a few minutes shy of her goal, finishing in 1:21:12. Nevertheless, she ran most of the 13.1 miles with little competition, and said she was mostly enjoying the sunshine.

"When I left Michigan we had snow flurries," she said, laughing. "I'm just glad to come down here where it's warm. My time wasn't great, but it was a good competitive effort, and I kept a consistent pace. I love that it finishes on the beach, near the ocean. I might come back every year."

Matthews plans to take the winter off before training begins for steeplechase competitions in the spring. Behind Matthews was Jacy Kruzel, 22, of New York City, who finished in 1:27:52 and in third, Kiernan Delaurier, 32, of Tampa, Florida.

Crowds gathered on the sand at Lummus Park to dance and relax as Alexis Y Fido performed at the post-race concert. Among the participants was "Real Housewives of Miami" star Ana Quincoces, who took on the second leg of the half-marathon relay, which her and her partner completed in 2:09:44. Also participating was Univision's Satcha Pretto, co-anchor of the network's popular morning show Despierta America, who finished with a time of 1:58:03.

Women's Half Marathon Weathers Windy St. Pete
Nearly 5,000 women participate in half-marathon and 5K

ST. PETERSBURG, FL - Nov. 18, 2012 - Thousands of women gathered for the Lady Speed Stick® Women's Half Marathon and Women's Running Magazine 5K on Sunday, Nov. 18. The windy 13.1-mile and 5K race started and finished downtown in Albert Whitted Park. Florida residents stole the spotlight, with Lauren Lumley from Sarasota crossing the 5K finish line first in 19 minutes, 44 seconds and Loni Smith from Lakeland placing first in the half marathon in 1:24:20.

"This event is about having a fun girl's weekend," said Dawna Stone, founder of the Women's Half Marathon Series. "Participants not only come for the race, but they stay because of the beautiful destination here in St. Pete. The Women's Half Marathon is another opportunity to encourage health and fitness in the community and thousands of women keep coming back year after year to run this race and stay fit."

The second place half-marathon finisher, Laura Rodriguez, completed the course in 1:27:54. Diana Sitar finished the 13.1 miles in 1:31:37, landing her in third place. Karen Keefe finished the 5K in second place with a time of 20:13, while 10-year-old Taylor Stone took third in 21:38. Smith, who ran solo for the duration of the half-marathon, used this race as part of her training for the Jacksonville Marathon, where she hopes to break three hours. She placed second at the Women's Half Marathon in St. Pete last year, and was pleased to win this time around.

"I felt like I had a good chance of winning overall going into the race. I was hoping to go a little faster today but it was really windy, especially at the pier," said Smith. "This was the first time I've ever had to run completely by myself and I was able to pick up the pace a little when the wind was at my back. Overall I enjoyed the race and course."

"I love this course and race," said Rodriguez. "I've run all three years and set a PR every time. I have the Boston Marathon coming up in April, so it's a good race leading up to it."

Third place winner, Sitar, was really shocked she placed at all, stating, "I didn't think I was going to run as fast as I did, so it was fun passing people. I was running with the 1:35 pace group, and two-miles into it I was feeling good and decided to try going faster. The wind gave me something to think about in terms of race strategy-from placement behind runners to lengthening or shortening my stride."

Each finisher received a patent-pending two-in-one medal and charm, a designer goodie bag, technical race shirt and a post-race finisher's breakfast and cookie café. The St. Pete event is part of a national series of half-marathons, uniquely catered toward women, combining a weekend destination with a scenic 13.1-mile course.

Operated by Competitor Group, the Lady Speed Stick® Women's Half Marathon Series (WHM) is the largest women's only half marathon series in the nation. Five events are scheduled for 2013 in Bloomington, Minn., Nashville, Tenn., Scottsdale/Tempe, Ariz., San Diego, Ca., and St. Petersburg, Fla.
