2012 CIF State Cross Country Championship Preview

2012 CIF STATE CROSS COUNTRY CHAMPIONSHIPS PRESENTED BY FARMERS

SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 24 AT WOODWARD PARK, FRESNO

Sarah Baxter Seeks a Girls Three-peat; SF University Girls Seek Ninth Title

SACRAMENTO – The 2012 CIF State Cross Country Championships presented by Farmers are on Saturday, Nov. 24 at Woodward Park in Fresno, the only home the event has ever known since 1987. The-5,000-meter course has hard packed dirt trails with some grass and asphalt. It features mild ups and downs over rolling hills with one steep short hill. The top three teams and 10 individuals in each race will receive awards in all five divisions for both boys and girls.

Chips Timing, a system that helps identify runners as they cross strategically placed electronic mats throughout the course and can accurately chart athletes split and finish times, will be used for the fourth straight season.

Two-time State Champion Sarah Baxter of Simi Valley seeks to become the sixth runner to capture three or more individual State Championships in girls’ State meet history. Additionally, Saugus girls (D-II) will be in the hunt for their seventh consecutive State title, while San Francisco University girls (D-V) are looking
to win a State-record tenth overall team title.

The Palos Verdes boys’ team looks to win back-to-back Division III team Championships, while individually John Lawson of Sir Francis Drake also looks to repeat as the Division IV State Champion.

General admission for the event is $10 for adults and $5 for children. Tickets may be purchased at the park Friday, November 23, from Noon-4 p.m., and throughout the day on Saturday, November 24.
