Kipkoech Ruto, Aziza Aliyu Win Anthem Richmond Marathon
Mengstu Nebsi sets new American Family Fitness Half Marathon course record; Hirut Beyene claims women's half-marathon title; Record-size field of 18,702 highlights 35th running of event

by Jackie Holt, Sportsbackers

RICHMOND, Va. - With a time of 2 hours, 15 minutes, 14 seconds, Kenya's Kipkoech Ruto (right, James Wallace photo), 23, won the 35th edition of the Anthem Richmond Marathon, taking home $3,000 in prize money - $2,500 for the first place finish and an additional bonus of $500 for finishing under two hours and twenty minutes. Aziza Aliyu, a 27-year-old Ethiopian, was the first female to cross the finish line, clocking in at 2:40:21.

In the fifth year of the American Family Fitness Half Marathon, a new course record was set in the men's division. Thirty-five-year-old Mengstu Nebsi of Ethiopia crossed the finish line with a time of 1:03:21, besting the previous course record set by George Towett in 2010 by 23 seconds.

In the HCA Virginia 8K, Raleigh, NC's Ryan Hill (22:37) inched past Jacob Riley of Rochester Hills, Michigan (22:38). On the female side, 22-year-old Neely Spence captured first place with a time of 25:22, setting a new course record for the women's 8K.

A record 18,702 participants hit the streets of Richmond, taking part in the weekend's events. The 26.2-mile Anthem Richmond Marathon drew 6,003 runners, a new registration record. One reason for the surge in numbers was the addition of more than 800 runners that opted to run the Richmond Marathon after the ING New York City Marathon was cancelled. The American Family Fitness Half Marathon had a sold out field of 8,215 and the HCA Virginia 8K had 4,484 participants.

"It was awesome," said Shannon Miller, a 34-year-old from Washington, D.C. who was the fifth female to cross the finish line in the HCA Virginia 8K. "I give it two thumbs up!" Miller was scheduled to run the ING New York City Marathon and decided to come to Richmond when the event in New York was cancelled due to Hurricane Sandy.

In addition to a record-breaking number of participants, tens of thousands of spectators lined the streets leading to the spectacular new riverfront finish. There were 28 bands and musical performers lining the courses as well as nine official cheering stations and four Party Zones.

The top three local runners, male and female, were also awarded prize money in the 2nd Richmond Region Marathon Championship. This year Jon Molz was the first male Richmonder to cross the finish line with a time of 2:24:43 and Meredith Axisa was the first female (2:57.38).

The first-ever Call Federal Credit Union Marathon Junior, a kids only running event tied to the Anthem Richmond Marathon, was held on Saturday, October 27. A total of 864 children ages 4-14 participated in the event at Byrd Park.

The 2013 Anthem Richmond Marathon is scheduled for Saturday, November 16. A special $65 marathon entry fee and $55 half marathon entry fee is available through 11:59 p.m. on Thursday, November 15.

Volpi, Mudy Win Allstate Life Insurance Fort Lauderdale 13.1 Marathon
More than 3,000 runners participated in the prep race for the 2013 ING Miami Marathon and Half Marathon; Alderin, Nedlo, win Karhu 5K

FORT LAUDERDALE (Nov. 11, 2012) - Jon Volpi of Boca Raton and Justyna Mudy of Rome, Ga. overcame windy conditions to win the fifth Allstate Life Insurance Fort Lauderdale 13.1 Marathon® on Sunday, Nov. 11.

Volpi, 29, won the men's division with a time of 1 hour, 11 minutes, 32 seconds, while Mudy, a 28-year-old Poland native, was the first woman to finish and the seventh overall runner in a time of 1:18:51.

Volpi was locked into a three-man race at the half-way point with 24-year-old Agustin Rey of Coral Springs and Miramar's Ronnie Holassie, 41, before pulling away. He finished 42 seconds faster than Rey (1:12:14), an all-conference runner at Nova Southeastern who graduated in 2011. Holassie, a three-time Palm Beach marathon winner, was third in 1:12:33, well off his personal best of 1:04:15.

"I know Ronnie and I knew we are on the same level so I thought we'd just stick together and work together, especially going out," said Volpi, who is in his first year as Lynn University's assistant women's cross country coach. "Then when we turned around (on the final stretch along Fort Lauderdale Beach), I thought I'd take advantage of the tail wind. With about four miles to go I felt pretty good, so I wanted to see how much I could pull away."

Mudy emerged from a pack of five runners -- including an Elvis Presley impersonator - to finish ahead of Russians Mariya Korobickaya (1:19:47) and Viktoriia Poliudina (1:21:02).

"Sometimes I thought I was running sideways," said the diminutive Mudy, who only weighs 111 pounds. "Without the wind it would have been perfect. Seeing the ocean was awesome. I'm just happy I won."

After jockeying for position over the first three miles of the race, Mudy made her move.

"I said 'holy cow, this is so slow'," said Mudy, who picked up her third 13.1 title after winning the Allstate Life Insurance Dallas 13.1 Marathon® last year and the Atlanta event on Sunday, Oct. 7. "So I just went."

Miami's Cobi Morales, a two-time winner in Fort Lauderdale, was fifth in 1:15:10 while 2011 women's champion Angela Cobb of Melbourne was the fifth woman to finish in 1:21:55.

More than 3,000 runners participated in the prep race for the 2013 ING Miami Marathon and Half Marathon® on Sunday, January 27, 2013. They challenged a new course which began just South of Broward Blvd. on SW 1st Ave. and wound through Downtown Fort Lauderdale including a unique run through the Henry Kinney tunnel before turning East along E. Las Olas Blvd., the famous stretch of galleries, cafes and shops that makes Downtown Ft. Lauderdale a pedestrian-friendly destination, and then along the beach with a finish at South Beach Park.

It also was the first year of a new title sponsorship by Allstate Life Insurance, which is sponsoring the entire 13.1 Marathon series that also includes races in Los Angeles (Sunday, January 13, 2013), New York (Saturday, March 23, 2013), Chicago (Saturday, June 8, 2013), Atlanta, Dallas, and Boston (2013 dates TBA).

The event also included the Karhu 5K race that was run on a modified route alongside the 13.1. Filip Alderin, who had flown in from Sweden to run in the ING New York City Marathon, finished first while Meagan Nedlo's "fun run" netted the women's title.

Alderin was a last-minute 5K entry following the New York Marathon's cancellation in the wake of Hurricane Sandy clean-up efforts.

"We had planned ahead of time to go to Florida for some rehab for me, "Alderin said. "Since New York was cancelled, I saw the banner and thought that a 5K was probably good for a vacation." The 34-year-old, who works as a controller for a European sports merchandiser, also found the wind his greatest challenge on this 75-degree South Florida morning.

"The headwind was pretty tough, especially when I was coming down Las Olas," said Alderin, who ran 17:02, short of his personal best 16:40.

Nedlo, an events coordinator for race sponsor Craft, used the event as a warm-up for next week's Philadelphia Marathon.

"If we could have run from the finish to the start it would have been so awesome," joked Nedlo. "It's nice and scenic and I liked everything about it except for the wind. You can keep working but you're not going to go faster. The amount of effort you're going to put out is not going to come back to you in regards to gaining time, so I just tried to relax and not fight it. "

Alderin and Nedlo were among the 10 runners who won a pair of shoes by beating Joaquin Cuadra, aka the Karhu Bear. Cuadra runs for Miami Sole Runners Club, but on this November morning he was the mascot of the Finnish shoe company that sponsors the race.

While some runners were winning shoes, others were giving them away. Nearly 300 pairs of lightly-worn shoes were collected at the event by non-profit Give Your Sole, which teamed up with All-State Life Insurance to make a donation to the Miami Rescue Mission.

"We work with rescue missions across the country," said Give Your Sole founder Brett Byrd. "Whatever city we are in we donate locally so we have immediate impact."

Give Your Sole has collected more than 10,000 shoes over the past four years at Allstate Life InsuranceSM 13.1 Series events. The Ft. Lauderdale collection was the fifth of 2012, which had already netted more than 2,000 pairs of shoes.

"The weather today was perfect for us," said race director Javier Sanchez. "It was a great half marathon race this morning. A real flat course allowed for a strong competition. We had a lot of South Florida fastest runners here. It's a great honor to any half-marathon when you've got everyone from Cobi Morales to Ronnie Holassie to Jon Volpe. Everyone seemed to love the new course, and it was more spacious than ever and filled with entertainment."

The inaugural Finish-Together Relay was a new wrinkle in 2012 which allowed teams of two to split the 13.1 mile distance and be awarded a pair of medals.

"It was a beautiful day for a race, although windy, the temperature was just right welcoming some of South Florida's top runners and representation from 22 countries," said Sanchez. "The growing popularity of the series reached a new milestone today honoring three participants, William Perez, Norman Veraa, & Joshua Hwung whom completed all eight 13.1® Series events in 2012. Traveling the nation to run the series will pay off for the now five individuals whom have now won free entry into any 13.1 Marathon® Series event for life."

Stanley Biwott Shatters Event Record at Rock 'n' Roll San Antonio Half Marathon
San Antonians Jose Munoz, Elizabeth Eder become city's first marathon champions; Country singer Jo Dee Messina runs 13.1-mile event before headlining post race concert
by Dan Cruz, Competitor Group

SAN ANTONIO (Nov. 11, 2012) - The Rock 'n' Roll San Antonio Marathon & Half Marathon benefiting Susan G. Komen celebrated its 5th birthday in style on Sunday, Nov. 11 when more than 25,000 entrants from all 50 states and 22 countries took to the city's downtown streets.

No runner arrived at the start line with better credentials than Kenya's Stanley Biwott (right, Competitor Group), who is undefeated in five races this year, including victories at the Paris Marathon (2:05:11) and Rock 'n' Roll Philadelphia Half Marathon (1:00:03). Biwott arrived in San Antonio through New York City, where he was a favorite to win the ING New York City Marathon last Sunday before it was canceled last weekend after Hurricane Sandy devastated the region. He was the first to cross the finish line outside the Alamodome, winning the men's half-marathon in 1 hour, 1 minute and 11 seconds, breaking the previous event record of 1:02:50 set by U.S. Olympian Brian Sell in 2008.

"This was a good test for me, I knew that I could do something in New York," said Biwott, who was acknowledging the cheering spectators and bands throughout the route. "I liked the spectators and I like San Antonio. They cheer for me a lot."

Dawn Grunnagle of Dallas was first in the women's half-marathon, finishing in 1:18:09. A 1,500-meter specialist on the track, it was her second consecutive half-marathon victory after winning the Allstate Life Insurance Dallas 13.1 Marathon two weeks ago.

San Antonio resident Jose Munoz emerged victorious in the marathon with a time of 2 hours, 27 minutes and 53 seconds. The 27-year-old took the lead at the 17-mile mark, passing Kenyan Abraham Rutto, who finished second with a time of 2:33:03.

"When I passed him I told him to come up beside me and run with me," Munoz said following the race. "But he said, 'No, man, you're too strong.' Once he told me that, I said, 'This is mine.'"

Cross-country coach Elizabeth Eder, a graduate of Trinity Christian High School in San Antonio, won the women's marathon in 3:06:20. She was followed by Erin Ruyle of Georgetown, who finished in second at 3:15:46. Like Biwott, Eder wasn't supposed to be in San Antonio. She had also been scheduled to run the New York City Marathon last weekend.

Not to be outdone, perhaps the performance of the day belonged to country music superstar Jo Dee Messina, who finished the half-marathon in 2:36:50 and took the stage approximately one hour later, headlining the event's finish-line concert outside the Alamodome. To the delight of thousands of runners in the audience, Messina performed wearing her half-marathon finisher's medal, CEP compression socks and bright blue running shoes.

"Today was awesome, it could not have gone any better," said Messina, who boarded a tour bus to Austin immediately following the concert. "Those bands out there on the course motivated me for our show; they really help break up the miles when you're out there running. Living and promoting a healthy lifestyle is important to me as a mother and to combine it with my passion for music was a dream come true."

This year's event marked the 5th edition of the Rock 'n' Roll Marathon & Half Marathon in San Antonio. Over the event's 5-year history in San Antonio, runners have raised nearly $6 million for charity and out of town visitors have pumped millions more into the local economy.

Outside Interactive Releases Virtual Runner App for the iPad
Virtual Runner App for the iPadAllows users to experience popular running routes virtually from the treadmill

BOSTON - Outside Interactive, a Boston-based startup and developer of forward motion video software technology for treadmill runners, today released its Virtual Runner app for the iPad that allows viewers to run popular running routes virtually all from the safety and comfort of their own treadmill. The high definition videos are shot from a runner's point of view and allow the runner to interactively view different virtual running routes as if they were on the course itself.

"The idea is to work with any treadmill and iPad," said Gary McNamee, Outside Interactive's president and founder. "Running on a treadmill can be a very boring experience for many. Our idea is to make the experience more engaging allowing users to learn different race courses before running the race, or view popular running routes of locations such as Central Park or the Washington Mall, or even scenic destinations such as Bali or the Australian Outback, all interactively while at home, at the gym, or on the road."

How does it work?

Virtual Runner's patent pending technology is designed to work with a runner's existing hardware. No special treadmill is required. The Virtual Runner app is downloaded to an iPad along with selected course videos. A footpod is attached to the runner's shoelace and a wireless receiver is plugged into the user's iPad.

Once the app is launched, there is a brief countdown and then the course video begins to play on the iPad or HDTV using Apple Airplay. While running, the footpod transmits the runner's stats to the iPad. The receiver then sends this information to the Virtual Runner software, which adjusts the speed of the video. If the runner runs faster, the video will speed up. If they slow down, the video will slow down, all to the exact pace of the runner. In addition, an on screen dashboard displays overall time, average pace, distance run and cadence. Heart rate is also displayed if the user wears an optional heart rate monitor.

The audio component contains the actual natural sounds captured when the footage was shot, which are not affected by speed change. Users can also listen to their music playlist if they choose. Runners have the option of starting anywhere along a given route by mile or kilometer or saved state, so a course can be broken up and covered over several runs.

The Virtual Runner app is available for $9.99 at the iTunes Store with the videos ranging from $4.99 to $9.99 and up for noted races and marathons. The app is compatible with accessories utilizing ANT+™ wireless technology. These accessories are what interactively drive the Virtual Runner app. ANT+ is the de facto standard in wireless for sports watches and accessories in the health and fitness industry from such manufacturers as Garmin®, Timex®, Adidas®, Wahoo Fitness® and Suunto®. With these accessories, the user interactively and accurately controls the video speed. If the user does not have or wish to purchase these accessories, they still have the option of manually setting and adjusting the video speed to match their pace by an onscreen slide control.

Virtual Runner in Health Clubs

"We're seeing more and more members working out with their iPads these days," said Ted Kyranos, Executive Director, of Old Colony YMCA in the Boston area. "Being able to run virtual race courses or even through Central Park or the Australian Outback right on the treadmill here in the Y is pretty compelling. Keeping a member engaged and motivated, it's a great idea."

Virtual Runner at the Races

Outside Interactive also hopes to work with interested race directors and race owners to showcase their event in a whole new way by highlighting their race courses on the day of the event, allowing runners to experience the races virtually, on their treadmill at their pace. Viewers can learn the race courses with their landmarks and elevation shifts, relive the race day experience, or run a virtual course they may be unable to travel to. Course videos for use with the Virtual Runner app would be available for purchase and download on the race's website site, Outside Interactive's video repository or the iTunes® store.

"Having a chance to preview a course beforehand is a great tool to have," said Dave McGillivray, President of DMSE Sports and Race Director for more than 30 different road races annually around the U.S. "Often people from out of town fly in to run a race and with such a short window, they don't have the chance to see the race course ahead of time. What better way to preview a course than at your own pace while you are on your treadmill?"

Virtual Runner Video File Sharing

Outside Interactive also has developed Virtual Runner to work with user created videos. With the advent of portable action cameras such as the Go-Pro® people can film their own favorite routes and view them when they are stuck inside due to inclement weather, traveling or otherwise. A plan is in the works to offer a video sharing platform on the Outside Interactive website in 2013. In the meantime, the company plans to continue to grow its library of professionally shot videos of popular running routes and scenic destinations.
