Trafeh Three-Peats USA 15K Title at Gate River

Cherobon-Bawcom, women's national champion, wins Equalizer Bonus; Team USA Minnesota, adidas McMillanElite team titlists

By Katie Landry, USATF

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - (March 10, 2012) - At the USA 15K Championships hosted by the 35th Gate River Run, Mo Trafeh (Duarte, Calif.) and Janet Cherobon-Bawcom (Rome, Ga.) dominated the men's and women's fields Saturday morning.

Trafeh ran 43 minutes, 23 seconds to win his third straight USA 15K title, while Cherobon-Bawcom clocked 49:41 to win her first 15K crown. The national championships were hosted for the 19th time by the Gate River Run, the country's largest 15K with more than 16,300 finishers. In addition to the $60,000 individual prize structure, the event featured a gender competition in the form of a $5000 Equalizer Bonus as well as a $20,000 team competition, the TenBroeck Cup.

With unusual clouds and wind, the U.S. professional women started at 8:23am with the men and the rest of the field following 7 minutes later. Cherobon-Bawcom, 33, started quickly, but by the first mile (5:15) a pack of seven had separated themselves from the field. Along with Cherobon-Bawcom, Molly Huddle (Providence, R.I.), Lindsey Scherf (Raleigh, N.C.), Maegan Krifchin (Ithaca, N.Y.), Clara Grandt (Morgantown, W.V.), Alisha Williams (Boulder, Colo.) and Adriana Nelson (Boulder, Colo.) bucking the wind together.

At three miles Huddle and Scherf moved to the front with Cherobon-Bawcom close behind. Scherf then began to push the pace doing much of the work with the chase pack 22 seconds behind.

By four miles Cherobon-Bawcom, Scherf, Huddle and Krifchin were a four-pack. At mile six Huddle and Cherobon-Bawcom pulled away from field and by the seventh mile the order of finish was set with Huddle, Krifchin and Scherf following.

In the men's race, Trafeh, 26, once again staked his claim to the U.S. 15K title with a 4:27 first mile, leading the men's pack by twelve seconds. He followed with a 4:28 second mile that extended his lead to 28 seconds. By the third mile, he was ahead of pace to break Todd Williams' longstanding U.S. record of 42:22 as he began his chase after the women's field and the Equalizer Bonus. Even as Trafeh started to reel in the women's field in rapid succession the wind was taking its toll on the soloist and it was apparent that the Equalizer would go to the women's champion this year for only the second time since 2004.

Trafeh scored an unchallenged 1:14 victory and $12,000 over Christo Landry (Ann Arbor, Mich.), while Tim Ritchie (Brighton, Mass.) took third in 44:41.

The TenBroeck Cup team championship was the closest ever on the women's side as Team USA Minnesota - Katie McGregor, Emily Brown and Meghan Peyton - won by seven seconds over the Boulder Running Company. It was the third Cup for the Minnesota training group. On the men's side, adidas McMillanElite defended their 2011 title with Ben Bruce, Scott Smith and Nick Arciniaga capturing the team title and $6000.

The Gate River Run was the third stop on the 2012 USA Running Circuit (USARC), a road race series consisting of national championships held throughout the year at distances from the street mile to the marathon.

NEW YORK - (March 7, 2012) - Former NCAA champion and U.S. Olympic 10,000 meter hopeful Bobby Curtis and 2011 NYRR Dash to the Finish Line 5K champion and British Olympic hopeful Chris Thompson lead a talented group of additions to the professional field for the NYC Half on Sunday, March 18, it was announced by New York Road Runners officials.

Big Sur's Mud Run a Military Experience

7th edition set for Saturday, March 24 at Cal State University Monterey Bay campus

MONTEREY, Calif. - (March 1, 2012) - A military flavor sets the stage for the 7th Mud Run, presented by the Big Sur International Marathon in cooperation with the U.S. Army Garrison-Presidio of Monterey (Morale, Welfare and Recreation) and Cal State University Monterey Bay. This year's event will take place on Saturday, March 24, beginning at 8:00am for the individual competition, followed by the team competition at 10:00am.

The race course encompasses five miles of road, trails, mud pits, walls and other obstacles throughout the CSUMB campus and former Ft. Ord lands in Seaside, California. The event begins and ends at CSUMB's Freeman Stadium. A increased field of 3,000 runners is expected for the 2012 event, competing in both individual and team competitions.

"Our runners love being treated like a soldier for a day in this fun event," said race director Wally Kastner, a former U.S. Marine Lt. Col. "We have a large military presence from our local installations, the Presidio of Monterey and the Naval Postgraduate School, making our race one of the few fully military-oriented adventure races in the country."

Patterned after the popular mud run at Camp Pendleton, Army and Marine drill sergeants bark orders to motivate participants along the way. Military volunteers will help with course set up as well as encouraging runners through mud pits, over five-foot walls, and manning exercise stations with pushups, squats and more. Many military teams will also compete in the event.

The 2012 Mud Run is on track to sell out in early March, but spectators are welcome at the race finish area which features the final mud pit with runners forced to "low crawl" under camouflage netting. Fees are $50 for individuals and $250 for a 5-person team entry, with a $10 discount for active military participants and students. Race proceeds benefit the Presidio's Morale, Welfare and Rec division, the athletic programs of Cal State University Monterey Bay and the Big Sur Marathon's youth fitness program, JUST RUN.

Operation Homefront Georgia, Kilometer Kids Charity Partners of AJC Peachtree Road Race

Race participants for 2012 event encouraged to raise money for official charities, as well as other charities of their choice, through CrowdRise platform

ATLANTA - (February 29, 2012) - The Atlanta Track Club, organizer of the AJC Peachtree Road Race, has announced that Operation Homefront Georgia Inc. and Kilometer Kids have been named the official charity partners of the 2012 AJC Peachtree Road Race. This is the first year that the Atlanta Track Club will have charity partners for the AJC Peachtree Road Race.

Operation Homefront Georgia provides emergency assistance to military families and wounded veterans in Georgia. The organization is based in East Cobb and serves approximately 1,000 families each month. Money raised through the 2012 AJC Peachtree Road Race will fund emergency financial grants to provide food and housing for Georgia military families in financial crisis.

"We are honored and excited to be chosen by the Atlanta Track Club to be the official charity partner for the 2012 AJC Peachtree Road Race," said Kimberly Scofi, president of Operation Homefront Georgia Inc. "Operation Homefront Georgia and the Atlanta Track Club are similar in that we both strive to be an inspiration to others while engaging those in the communities we serve."

The Atlanta Track Club's Kilometer Kids is an incentive-based youth running program that empowers children with the knowledge they need to make smart lifestyle choices. The program launched in 2007 with one location serving 38 kids. Today, Kilometer Kids impacts more than 2,800 kids from 53 schools in at-risk communities throughout the Atlanta region. The money raised through the 2012 AJC Peachtree Road Race charity program will allow the organization to broaden its impact in the Atlanta community.

"With 60,000 participants, the AJC Peachtree Road Race is an incredible platform to help raise funds for well-deserved charities like Operation Homefront Georgia and Kilometer Kids," said Tracey Russell, executive director of the Atlanta Track Club. "Through our official charity partner program as well as CrowdRise, we'll be able to see what a positive impact this event can have on the metro Atlanta community and beyond."

Event participants are encouraged to raise money for the two official charity partners, as well as any charities of their choice, through the Atlanta Track Club's partnership with CrowdRise. CrowdRise, an impact site designed to make fundraising easy and fun, offers a custom built platform and "game theory"' that has proven to be a huge asset to runners' and charities' fundraising efforts. Through CrowdRise, the AJC Peachtree Road Race charity campaign will be executed on one unifying platform making it easier to track, coordinate and optimize the campaign while sharing the philanthropic story of the event in the most compelling way.
