LOS ANGELES, Calif. - Oregon collected nine victories with at least as many personal bests Saturday at the USC Trojan Invitational at Loker Stadium-Cromwell Field. Four freshmen won their events for the Ducks - Johnathan Cabral [Calabasas, Calif. (Agoura)] , Sam Crouser, Chancey Summers and Claudia Francis.
"It was a very successful meet and a big day for the men and women of Oregon,"said Associate Athletic Director Vin Lananna. "There were so many big performances across the board, especially for this early in the season.

"After seeing Texas A&M and Washington, it should be an exciting Pepsi meet in two weeks, and an ever better Pac-12 meet."

Cabral impressed again by winning the men's 110 hurdles. The Calabasas, Calif., native ran a personal-best 13.76, which was the fourth-fastest time in Oregon history.

Anne Kesselring just missed a personal best in winning the women's 1,500 meters. The junior from Nurnberg, Germany, controlled the race from early on and won in 4:16.75, just half a second off her PR. Natosha Rogers of Texas A&M was second in 4:18.75.

Sophomore English Gardner broke in to the UO top in the 400 meters by winning in 53.74. Kanika Beckles of Texas A&M had the next-fastest time at 53.94.

Summers established a personal best to win the women's high jump. The freshman from Eagle Creek, Ore., cleared the bar at 5-10.5/1.79m on her first attempt. In fact, Summers needed two jumps to make the very first bar of the competition before reeling off five straight first attempt clearances. The height of 5-10.5 was the sixth-best clearance in school history.

"English in the 400 and Kesselring in the 1,500 were terrific, and it was exciting to see that performance out of our freshman Summers in the high jump," said Lananna.

Also victorious for the Duck women on Saturday were Francis, who won the 800 meters in 2:10.22, and junior Taylor Wallace, who captured the 3,000 meter steeplechase in 10:33.92.

Oregon went 1-2 in the men's 1,500. Boru Guyota just missed his PR to win in 3:47.89, while senior Travis Stanford ran a personal-best 3:48.24 to finish second.

Brian Schaudt won the men's triple jump with a leap of 50-8.75/15.46m. The senior from Philomath saved his best jump for his final attempt.

Crouser made his Oregon debut in the javelin with an impressive throw of 239-2/73.02m. That throw - on his final attempt - won his section and was also the farthest of any over the two-day meet. The freshman from Gresham, Ore., moved into the UO top ten at No. 5 in his first meet as a Duck.

Teammate Ethan Powell also set a big PR in the javelin. The sophomore from Tenmile, Ore., saw his collegiate best improve nearly 20 feet to 223-7/68.14m. That was second in Saturday's javelin competition and was fourth overall in the meet.

Elijah Greer opened his 2012 season with a runner-up performance in the men's 800 meters. The sophomore from Lake Oswego, Ore., ran 1:46.84, just behind Texas A&M's Michael Preble who won in 1:46.43. Duck sixth-year senior Travis Thompson just missed a PR in a fourth-place finish at 1:47.82.

"That was a great opener for Elijah," said Lananna. "Crouser, Ethan Powell, Jonathan Cabral, and Boru (Guyota) all had fantastic early season performances. I was pleased with both 200s as well."

Oregon also saw some impressive performances in the women's 200 meters. Phyllis Francis won her heat in a personal best 23.42. That time moved the sophomore from Queens, N.Y., to No. 5 on the UO top 10. Senior Lauryn Newson [Richmond, Calif. (Laney CC) (Pinole Valley)] was right behind her in 23.69, the seventh-fastest 200 in school history. The two had the third- and fourth-fastest times overall on Saturday.

Sophomore Laura Bobek set a personal best in the shot put with a fourth-place throw of 45-8.5/13.93m.

In one of many previews of the April 7 Pepsi Team Invitational, Oregon finished second in the women's 4x400 meter relay to Texas A&M by less than a second. The Ducks' team of Francis, Devin Gosberry, Chizoba Okodogbe [Antioch, Calif. (Deer Valley)]and Amber Purvis [Hercules, Calif. (Benicia)timed 3:37.80. The Aggies won in 3:36.95.
