Ericka Nowell set a meet record in the 400 hurdles Saturday.
IRVINE, Calif. --- Junior Ericka Nowell and senior Amber Middleton led UC Irvine in the Spring Break Invitational at Anteater Stadium Saturday.
Nowell won the 400-meter hurdles in a meet-record time of 59.18 and Middleton was second in 59.50 for the third-fastest time in UCI history. Kelly Collins finished ninth in 62.67 and KayC Wharton was 10th in 63.68.
Middleton was second in the 100-meter hurdles in 13.80 as she improved on her No. 2 time in the Anteater record book.
Middleton and Nowell ran the second and anchor legs of UCI's second-place 4x400 relay that posted a season-best 3:45.40 with Wharton and Collins running the first and third legs, respectively.
Sanmisola George finished fourth in the 100 meters (12.30) with Martina Mickos placing sixth (12.41) and Breeanca Fleming ninth (12.45).
George was fifth in the 200 meters in 25.04 and Kira Helmer eighth (25.30).
Sakia Sailinuu finished eighth in the 800 meters with a time of 2:13.28 and Helmer was 10th in the 400 meters (58.06).
In the field events, Itos Aikhionbare placed fourth in the shot put with a mark of 44-3 ¼ as she improved on her third-best mark in UCI history. She was fifth in the discus throw at 138-10 while Christa Kondru was eighth at 127-9.
Jennica Smith finished sixth in the triple jump (34-9) and 10th in the long jump at 16-9 ¼.
Chelsea Pham was seventh in the javelin throw with a mark of 114-5 and Lauren Freschauf placed seventh in the pole vault at 11-2 ¼.
UCI competes in the Cal/Nevada Championships next Saturday and Sunday in Claremont.
