Jeanne Daprano named USATF Athlete of the Week

INDIANAPOLIS - Jeanne Daprano has been named USA Track & Field’s Athlete of the Week after setting three age-group world records at the USA Masters Indoor Track & Field Championships March 16-18 in Bloomington, Ind.

Daprano (Fayetteville, Ga.) scored one W75 record on each day of the three-day meet. Daprano first set the world record in the 400m in 1:21.28 before she demolished the previous W75 mile record of 8:05.93 by more than 50 seconds to set a new mark of 7:13.51.

On the final day of competition, Daprano not only set a world record in the 800m at 3:18.48, but also set an American Record in the 200m at 36.53. Daprano’s 200m time was also faster than the previous world record, but Christa Bortingnon of Canada won the race as a guest competitor and claimed the new world record of 34.53.

“I am thrilled at what my body is able to do,” Daprano said after her mile record. “They don’t run the mile at the World Indoor Championships so this was the only place to get this record. All of the older athletes here - I am just thrilled to see how well they are doing.”

Now in its eleventh year, USATF’s Athlete of the Week program is designed to recognize outstanding performers at all levels of the sport. USATF names a new honoree each week and features the athlete on www.usatf.org. Selections are based on top performances and results from the previous week.
