Gray, Ailes-Istnick Capture USA 50K Road Crowns
Senior Masters superstar Kathryn Martin, 60, finishes 4th overall in 3:58:37 and sets several U.S. age group records on the 5K course

by Roy Pirrung

LLOYD HARBOR, N.Y. - (March 4, 2012) - For the sixth consecutive year, the Greater Long Island Running Club, one of the largest running clubs in the U.S., hosted the USA 50K Road Championships at the Caumsett State Park Preserve on Sunday.

This year's national champion in the men's division was newcomer to the distance, Joe Gray, 28, Newcastle, WA, who produced a near course record time of 2 hours, 56 minutes, 43 seconds. Gray was pursuing the U.S. record, but ran out of gas over the final lap on the 5K (3.1 mile) meandering course just missing runner-up Michael Wardian's course record of 2:55:05 from 2010.

Wardian, who ran to a runner-up 2:22 marathon finish the day before in Texas, clocked 3:02:55. Wardian was the silver medalist at the 2011 IAU 100K World Championships and won USATF's Ted Corbitt Award as Ultra Runner of the Year, while Gray was last year's USATF Mountain Runner of the Year. Rounding out the top three was Todd Braje in 3:06:21.

On the women's side, 33-year-old Shanna Ailes-Istnick, Kent, OH, ran consistent laps for the national title in 3:36:50, more than 10 minutes ahead of Tracy Meder's 3:47:10. Annette Bednosky, a past member of the 100K and 24-Hour National Teams, placed third in 3:48:45. Jodi Schoppmann, who was last year's national champion and owns the course record of 3:20:12, did not participate this year.

Highlighting the Masters race was a fourth-place finish by 60-year-old, Kathryn Martin (left, PhotoRun), who set several pending national records en route to an impressive 3:58:37 finish (a 60-64 U.S. age group 50K record). Her splits at 20K, 25K, 30K and her finishing time are eligible for records.

"Over the years, the GLIRC has seen continued growth in its championship race," said Carl Grossbard, race director, "I am pleased our club can host a high caliber event and showcase the talents of ultra runners, both locally and nationally."

The race has already been awarded the USA 50K Road Championships for 2013, and organizers plan to bid for future years.

McDougal, Suszek Win USA 50 Mile Trail Titles
Vega, Frazeur Masters champions at Nueces Trail Run

by Jason Bryant

ROCKSPRINGS, Texas - (March 3, 2012) - In the remote, rugged, and beautiful setting of Camp Eagle in Rocksprings, the USA 50 Mile Trail Championships hosted by the Nueces Trail Run took place on Saturday. The course was a rugged and rolling three loop route with plentiful amounts of rocks. The runners joked that the number of rocks on the course seems to multiply every year and speculate that race director Joe Prusaitis imports rocks to the camp and throws them onto the trails.

With a $3000 prize purse up for grabs, the runners came ready to race. In the men's race, the 2011 USA 100 Mile champion David James (Phoenix, AZ) took an early lead. He was followed by a chase pack of six talented runners. Twenty-four year-old Jordan McDougal from Gainesville, VA broke away from the pack around mile 10 and caught James near the end of the second lap of the race. From there, McDougal extended his lead over his competitors, finishing in a time of 6 hours, 30 minutes, 47 seconds. James was national runner-up in 6:43:48, while perennial USA Championship competitor Jason Bryant (Elkin, NC) rounded out the top three in 6:47:53. The top Masters runner (40 and older) was Dan Vega, 44, from Colorado Springs, in 7:13:14 ($200).

After the race, McDougal commented on how much he enjoyed the course and attested to its difficulty, especially as the sun warmed the air in the last lap. McDougal was seen cooling himself during the race in the low water crossings, even getting down and rolling in a small muddy stream at one point.

In the women's race, Michelle Suszek (Lone Tree, CO) and Melanie Fryar (Englewood, CO) ran together for the majority of the race before Suszek, 29, a member of the 2011 USA Mountain Running Team and competitor at the 2012 U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials in Houston, broke away in the third lap to run 7:25:41 and set a course record. Fryar finished 20 minutes back in 7:45:28, happy with her silver medal finish only 5 weeks after having her gall bladder removed. Lorena Devlyn took third in 9:54:50 and Rochelle Frazeur, 41, won the women's Masters title (10:44:43).

After the race, runners lounged around the finish line, enjoying some Texas sunshine. Others gingerly made their way down the steps to the river to chill their tired legs while enjoying their recovery beverages. For many, this will include a trip back to Rocksprings, as Nueces will again host the USA 50 Mile Trail Championships in 2013.

Chirchir, Gesabwa Take Allstate Life Insurance Miami Beach 13.1 Marathon
Winners earn $13,100 in newly sponsored national half-marathon series

by Gary Ferman

MIAMI - (March 4, 2012) - With a mile remaining at the Allstate Life Insurance Miami Beach 13.1 Marathon® Sunday morning, Kenyan native Eric Chirchir pulled away from runner-up and countryman Philemon Terer.

That's when he began thinking how he'd spend the $13,100 half-marathon winner's purse that he was eligible for.

The first thing he'll do with the money?

"Supply a present to my daughter," Chirchir said. "She's 3-years-old."

Chirchir, 28, had no problems shaking off the muggy conditions from the 80 degree temperatures that affected some runners. After crossing the finish line, Chirchir knelt and kissed the ground.

"At the 11th mile, I was feeling comfortable and strong," said Chirchir, who ran 1 hour, 3 minutes, 55 seconds - 27 seconds ahead of Terer. "I was thinking to finish the race quick. I increased the pace, knew the pace was high and saw he could not match my pace."

Terer won $1000, while third place finisher Tesfaye Alemayehu, who is from Ethiopia, earned $500.

Risper Gesabwa made it a Kenyan sweep with a 1:17:07 finish on the women's side, well ahead of the 1:22:40 time of Melbourne Beach's Angela Cobb. Gesawaba also won $13,100. Boca Raton's Sara Gomez placed third in 1:29:31, but was not awarded prize money since she did not register or qualify as an elite runner.

Gesabwa, 22, previously won the 13.1 Marathon Los Angeles in 1:14:37, and she called the $13,100 prize "a jackpot."

"It was very hot, but for me, it was not bad. My coach and my husband have been training me so much for this," Gesabwa said. "When they told me about the jackpot, they told me to focus on it. They trained me for it - my husband said if I followed the schedule, I would win the jackpot. I will thank my God, ask God to help me to use the money well because it can make my life change."

Adding Miami flair to the race: A basketball-dribbling racer in a LeBron James jersey and a man who ran while juggling.

"It was a great event," said David Scott, General Manager and Race Director for US Road Sports & Entertainment of Florida. "The men, around mile nine it started to separate. One and two were together for like three miles. And then (Chirchir) took a big lead, really pulled away."

The Karhu 5K was held in conjunction with the 13.1 Marathon for those runners and walkers looking for a shorter distance. The winner was 21-year-old Spencer Deleveaux with an 18:05 finish, edging out 44-year-old Dutch Hendricks by four seconds. Deleveaux is a University of Miami senior majoring in biochemistry, and he's a member of the Hurricanes' running club.

The top 5K women's finisher was 32-year-old Sadie Wells in 19:56, placing sixth overall. Wells is a CrossFit trainer on Miami Beach.

The event, which featured 2,952 runners in the 13.1 race and 732 in the Karhu 5K, has a new name in 2012 thanks to the Allstate Life Insurance Company title sponsorship.

Inaugural Thelma & Louise Half Marathon Announced for May 2012

New road race added to Moab Half Marathon roster; new event is expected to draw more than 1,000 women and will benefit local women's shelter and girls' running program

MOAB, Utah - (February 29, 2012) - Moab Half Marathon, Inc., a presenter of premier road races, will launch an all-women's half-marathon on Saturday, May 12, 2012.

Mother's Day weekend will be a fitting date for an event that will celebrate how far women have come both on and off the roads. The race was conceived in the spirit of Thelma & Louise, the 1991 award-winning film about two good friends who find themselves on the run-literally and figuratively-and end up in the desert. The downhill point-to-point 13.1 mile course descends from Canyonlands National Park (a few miles from where the final scenes of the movie were shot) on a scenic highway affording views of sandstone buttes and canyons, snowcapped mountains and Arches National Park.

"We wanted a course that evoked the film," says race director Ranna Bieschke.

While Thelma and Louise had a dusty, hot experience in redrock country, runners can expect considerably kinder treatment. Goodie bags stocked with treats and technical apparel will be given to all participants at the pre-race expo on Friday. Runners will be greeted along the course by enthusiastic volunteers at well-provisioned aid stations and by friends, family and other runners at the Thelma & Louise Half Marathon finish line.

Just like the leading ladies in the movie, this race has style and substance. Behind the gorgeous landscape and fun, runners will be supporting two organizations that support women in different ways. Girls On The Run seeks to develop confidence and positive self-image in pre-teen girls through running. Seekhaven Family Crisis Center in Moab provides services for victims of domestic violence and sexual assault.

Additionally, the event aspires to be as low-impact as possible. All waste generated by the event will be sorted into trash, recycle and compost; race bags are sturdy, attractive and reusable; plastic water bottles have been eliminated from the start, course, and finish and replaced with compostable cups.

Adds Bieschke, "Positively affecting the environment and our community is an important part of our mission."
