Broadbent, Day win Indoor Combined Events Championship

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Eric Broadbent and Sharon Day both claimed their first USA Indoor Combined Events Championship titles this weekend, March 3-4, as numerous championship and facility records fell at Gladstein Field House on the campus of Indiana University.

Broadbent (Cary, N.C.) racked up five personal best marks over the two days of competition, and while he was in the lead going into the last event, there were still five men in contention for the gold medal at the start of the 1,000 meters. Broadbent turned in an impressive nine second personal best (2:39.17) to secure his first USA title.

David Klech (San Ramon, Calif.) finished in second with 5,809 points in a narrow victory over defending champion Nick Adcock (Colombia, Mo.) with 5,796 points.

Reigning world decathlon champion Trey Hardee set a meet record of 6.75 in the 60m, won the 60m hurdles in a meet record and personal best of 7.75 and ran a personal best of 2:45.67 in the 1,000m. Hardee, who had elbow surgery in the fall, did not vault or give a full effort in the shot put, placing him 11th.

In the women’s pentathlon, Day (Costa Mesa, Calif.) took over the lead in the second event of the day, the high jump and never relented. In the 800, Day recorded a personal best by nearly two seconds (2:11.89) Day’s score of 4,567 points is a best by 100 points.

Abbie Stechschulte (Bloomington, Ind.) and Bettie Wade (Manhattan, Kan.) battled for the runner-up spot and were only separated by two-points overall. Wade ran the fastest time of the day in the 60m hurdles (8.39) and remained in second after the high jump; however, in the final event, Stechschulte delivered a near-best performance in the 800 to edge out Wade for the runner-up spot. Steschulte finished with 4,373 points to Wade’s 4,371 points.
