Team USA Arizona Receives Grant from Woodrow Wilson Bridge Half Marathon
Partnership between professional race and training group to support U.S. distance running development
ALEXANDRIA, Va. - (December 13, 2011) - Team USA Arizona, an emerging elite distance runner training camp in Flagstaff, received the first annual grant from the Woodrow Wilson Bridge Half Marathon presented by WillPower Sport & Wellness today.
The 13.1-mile race from Mount Vernon, Va., to National Harbor, Md., earlier this year pledged $1 per entry at the October 2 race toward a training camp dedicated to grooming Olympic and World Championship distance runners. In addition, race organizers offered American-only prize money and a $1300 bonus for any American qualifying for the U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials next month in Houston.
Team USA Arizona sent two aspiring elite American distance runners - Jordan Horn and Danny Mercado (West Covina HS, Oregon) - of the four who qualified for the Olympic Trials at the Woodrow Wilson Bridge Half Marathon.
"When you really analyze the sport, there are just a few Ryan Hall's and Meb Keflezighi's in distance running who can focus solely on running and not working other jobs to support themselves," Event Director Steve Nearman said. "Our sport is so hampered by this, which is a huge barrier of entry into the profession of elite distance runner. You don't see the thousands of professional baseball, hockey, basketball and football players working second jobs to afford being a professional athlete.
"What I am trying to achieve is a partnership between race and training camp. So often, your invited top athlete(s) get injured and withdraw during the week or two before the race. In our approach, Team USA Arizona sent their healthy, race-ready professionals to our race and they both benefited greatly. While professional teams have contracts with their players, our sport does not, except for appearance money for a very few who already have made it in our sport and have sponsors. Our partnership comes closer to the major sports model, with race directors committing money to the training camps which send them competitive athletes who then enhance their races. We totally support the efforts of Team USA Arizona and are excited and proud to have some horses in the Olympic Marathon Trials race."
Nearman donated $3668 to the 12-member Team USA Arizona on behalf of his 3,668 registrants to continue to groom competitive American distance professionals.
"We are honored to receive this donation from Steve," Tracy McMillan, Board President, Team USA Arizona, said. "When he announced his commitment to U.S. distance running of $1 per race entry from the Woodrow Wilson Bridge Half Marathon, we ourselves committed to sending athletes to his race to support his dedication to the sport and the growth of athletes like Jordan Horn and Danny Mercado.
"Jordan and Danny came away from the race with Olympic Marathon Trials qualifying times, a qualifying time financial bonus that Steve also provided at his event, and a great experience at a premier race. We thank Steve and everyone at the Woodrow Wilson Bridge Half Marathon for their generosity and we look forward to working together in support of U.S. distance running."

Boomtown Run Renamed Joplin Memorial Run
Event receives national recognition as Runner's World Heroes of Running
JOPLIN, Mo. - (December 13, 2011) - In honor of the 161 individuals who lost their lives in the EF5 tornado that devastated Joplin on May 22, 2011, the Boomtown Run has been renamed the Joplin Memorial Run. It will take place Saturday, May 19, 2012, a date chosen to correspond as closely as possible to the city-wide activities that will commemorate the first anniversary of the tragedy.
When organizers were forced to cancel the Boomtown Run, the outpouring of support from runners across the country inspired them to transform the event into the Boomtown Day of Service. It was held June 11, 2011, the scheduled event date.
Involving hundreds of runners nationwide and resulting in nearly $40,000 in donations to disaster recovery, the 2011 Boomtown Day of Service is being recognized as one of Runner's World Heroes of Running in its January 2012 issue.
This honor, usually given to individuals, recognizes the Boomtown Run for its endurance in a time of tremendous struggle in the community.
"We are so honored and pleased to have received this recognition. It is truly a testament to the generosity of the running community," said Audie Dennis, Joplin Memorial Run Chairperson.
Due to the tremendous growth of the event over the past three years, registration for both the Joplin Memorial Run Half-Marathon and 5K will be capped in 2012. A maximum of 3,000 will run the half marathon, with the 5K capped at 1,000. Because of these limits, runners are encouraged to register early at: www.joplinmemorialrun.com
"We are very excited about the changes we have made to the 2012 event," Dennis added, "We were overwhelmed by the support of the running community after cancelling the 2011 event. Approximately 325 runners came to Joplin for the Boomtown Run Day of Service to assist in recovery efforts. In addition, more than $37,000 was raised for tornado relief efforts from monies donated by our registrants and at 'satellite' Boomtown Run events held in Florida, Illinois and Michigan."
Jeff Galloway, 1972 Olympian and creator of the Run/Walk/Run marathon training program, has agreed to serve on the board of directors for the Joplin Memorial Run and will be a speaker at the 2012 Pre-Race Banquet. Other activities include a Post-Race Party and free one-mile Kids Run.

RRCA Announces Third Round of Runner Friendly Community Designations
Pensacola, FL and Glastonbury, CT selected as communities that foster physical activity and local partnerships to promote running
ARLINGTON, Va. - (December 14, 2011) - The Road Runners Club of America (RRCA), the oldest and largest distance running organization in the United States, has announced the third round of selections for the Runner Friendly Community designation: Pensacola, FL and Glastonbury, CT.
These communities have shown that they meet the program's criteria, which includes community infrastructure, community support and local government support for running. Each community has an infrastructure that can foster physical activity in a safe environment; a proven track record that organizations and businesses work together to promote running as a healthy exercise and sport; and there are positive relationships between the running community and local government.
The goals of the Runner Friendly Community program are to shine a national spotlight on communities that standout as runner-friendly and to provide incentives and ideas for communities to work towards becoming runner friendly communities. Runner friendly communities can increase the quality of life, improve physical activity for residents as outlined in the National Physical Activity Plan, and provide for increased economic impact for the community.
"We have realized the benefits and value of running for our families, our health, and our community, regardless of age or ability," said Pat Kozma of the Pensacola Runners Association. "Our runner friendly environment allows us to run almost 365 days a year with the Gulf of Mexico, Historic Downtown Pensacola or The Black Water State Park as our back drop."
While runners do not require a lot of expensive equipment, there are several ways that local communities can invest to ensure that running is safe, affordable, accessible and enjoyable for anyone that wants to run.
