COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Air Force junior pole vaulter Rob Simmons was named the Mountain West Men's Indoor Track and Field Athlete of the Week, the league office announced this afternoon (Dec. 13).It is the first time that Simmons has claimed the weekly MW honor.

Simmons used a career-best clearance of 17'8½" to finish first among collegiate competitors (and second overall) at Air Force Blue and Silver Open on Friday, Dec. 9. That mark, a personal improvement by eight inches, is the third-best height in Academy history.

By tying for the highest clearance of the meet, Simmons currently leads the nation in the pole vault.

The award, which Simmons shared with the conference's female athlete of the week, Mele Vaisima of Boise State, covered all meets during the month of December.

The Falcons return to action after the holiday break when they host the 2012 Air Force All-Comers Meet on Friday, Jan. 13, at the Academy's Cadet Field House.
