Senior Darren Fahy (Carlsbad), sixth last year in 15:49, won the boy's seeded race in 15:29. Senior Billy Gaudreau (Dana Point), 30th last year in 16:25, placed fifth in 15:42. Senior Cameron Miller (Bakersfield) was sixth in 15:43. The top ten finishers qualify for the Foot Locker National next week in San Diego. Here was the order at the announcer's station with about 600 meters remaining: 1st Fahy (finished 1st), 4th Miller (finished 6th), 6th Gaudreau (finished 2nd), 7th Myles Smith (finished 9th), 8th CJ Albertson (finished 8th), 9th Kevin Durham (finished 10th), 11th Cody Brazel (finished 12th), 12th John Lawson (finished 17th).

Junior Karlie Garcia (Roseville), who is 4 feet 10 inches tall and 80 pounds, won in 17:46. Sophomore Sarah Robinson (Los Altos Hills) was fourth in 18:11. Junior Nikki Hiltz (Aptos) was sixth in 18:17. Here was the order at the announcer's station with about 600 meters remaining: 1st Garcia (finished 1st), 4th Robinson (finished 4th), 5th Hiltz (finished 6th), 8th Camille Chapus (finished 9th), 9th Anna Maxwell (finished 10th), 12th Clare Carroll (finished 8th). Carroll's good finish earned her a trip to Nationals.

Camille Chapus' mother is Vickie Cook. Cook (Northridge) was sixth in the Kinney National Finals in 1979 in 18:04, third in 1980 in 17:31, and sixth in 1981 in 17:17.

Carrie Verdon (Moraga), who defeated Garcia at State, had to scratch, because of injury.
