Program to focus on educational and professional improvement opportunities and certifications for coaches at levels

NEW ORLEANS –The U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) is pleased to announce the launch of the Track & Field Academy, an educational and certification program designed to provide professional development opportunities for coaches at all levels of the sport. The mission of the Track & Field Academy is to deliver ongoing educational experiences and certification opportunities, covering the technical, managerial and philosophical aspects of the profession.
The Track & Field Academy’s curriculum is a sequential, organized program of instruction with certifications and endorsements for multiple levels of the coaching profession. Courses and programs range from broad based instruction to specific, highly technical courses. In addition, the Track and Field Academy will provide opportunities for professional improvement in other areas including academic monitoring, recruiting, and meet management, among others. The program will offer multiple opportunities for continuing education without the need to exit the program once certifications are achieved.
The Track & Field Academy is open to both members and non-members of the USTFCCCA.
“The creation of the Track & Field Academy represents another opportunity to serve our members and to invest in the future of the sport,” says Sam Seemes, USTFCCCA CEO.
“I have appointed accomplished coach and educator Boo Schexnayder to chair the Track & Field Academy Advisory Board – a group that includes several veterans of the coaching and teaching profession,” Seemes continued. “The charge of the Advisory Board has been to develop and execute a broad based curriculum for the Academy that serves the needs of our membership and the coaching community as a whole.”
“Continuing education opportunities for Track and Field Coaches have long lagged behind the demands and needs,” says Schexnayder. “The Track and Field Academy represents an exciting, new and complete approach to continuing education for coaches. The suggestions and requests we have received from the coaching body have energized the development of this program, and I look forward to seeing its future expansion and growth.”
The first offerings of the Track & Field Academy will take place this December. The first of a currently scheduled six Track & Field Technical Certification (TFTC) courses is set to take place at Texas Christian University in Fort Worth, Texas, on December 3rd and 4th. Other TFTC courses are scheduled to take place in Pittsburgh, Houston, Raleigh, N.C., St. Louis, Mo., and St. Paul, Minn. in the coming months.
Registration for these courses will open on October 15th.

In addition, in early 2011, some courses and certifications will begin being offered online, conveniently combining instruction and testing.
The first of the Academy’s advanced courses will be offered in the summer of 2011.

The U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) is a non-profit professional organization representing cross country and track & field coaches of all levels. The organization represents over 8,000 coaching members encompassing 94% of all NCAA track & field programs (D-I, D-II, and D-III) and includes members representing the NAIA as well as a number of state high school coaches associations. The USTFCCCA serves as an advocate for cross country and track & field coaches, providing a leadership structure to assist the needs of a diverse membership, serving as a lobbyist for coaches' interests, and working as a liaison between the various stakeholders in the sports of cross country and track & field.
