Oregon State Cross Country finishes third at Inaugural John Frank Memorial

CORVALLIS, Ore. - The Oregon State women's cross country team kicked off its 2010 season with a third place finish at the Inaugural John Frank Memorial Invitational women's 4,500 meter run Friday night at Avery Park in Corvallis.

Jennifer Macias finished eighth overall for the Beavers with a time of 16:19.80 with Hannah Soza-Hodgkinson [5-2 JR Forest Ranch, Calif./Pleasant Valley HS] closely behind. Soza-Hodgkinson finished ninth with a time of 16:23.70.

"The invitational went really well with the four schools what were here," Oregon State women's head cross country coach Kelly Sullivan said following the race. "We hope to expand it to about 10 teams over the next few years and keep it at that. It turned out great. It was a beautiful day and everyone liked the course. We had a whole lot of supports. The idea behind doing something like this is whatever we can do to get alums and the community involved."

Oregon won the event with a total team score of 16 points with Zoe Buckman of Oregon coming in first in the women's race with a time of 16:00.60. The University of Portland finished in second place with 57 points, just two points ahead of the Beavers.

"We had a couple of really good performances," Sullivan said. "I think Jen (Macias) ran really well today and I was really pleased with Hannah (Soza-Hodgkinson) and her run. We have some work to do but it shows us where we're at. We'll go to work for the next few weeks and get ready for the next meet."

Along with the women's 4,500 meter race there was a men's 4 mile run which saw the Oregon men coming in first with a score of 22 points. Portland finished second with 53 points with Portland State finishing third with 59 points. Ben DeJarnette of Oregon finished in first place with a final time of 19:36.10.

Between the women's and men's races there was a presentation by the Oregon State cross country program to members of John Frank's family who were in attendance. John Frank, the name sake of the event, was a cross country and track runner for the Beavers in the 1980's who was tragically killed in a work accident. The event was created to honor his memory and to bring awareness back to the Oregon State program.
