Cal Women Claim Hornet Jamboree Golden Bear Men Third in Second Weekend of Racing in 2010

SACRAMENTO - For the second Saturday in a row, the Cal women's cross country squad won the team competition in weekend racing, this time with a victory at the Hornet Jamboree hosted by Sacramento State. The Golden Bear men also took third in the competition run at Granite Regional Park.

After capturing the opening USF Invitational last Saturday, the Cal women were led this week by sophomore Laurynne Chetelat (RS SO TR Davis, Calif./Stanford), who was second among collegians with a time of 17:52 over the 5000-meter course. The Bears placed two other runners in the top 10, with Michelle Davis (JR 1V San Rafael, Calif./San Rafael HS) third in 17:56 and Taylor Bryson (RS JR 1V Costa Mesa, Calif./Newport Harbor HS) 10th in 18:13. Bryson improved from a 54th-place finish (20:42) at USF.

Rounding out the Cal lineup were Crystal Esparza (JR 1V Riverbank, Calif./Fred Beyer HS) in 11th (18:14), Ellie Keene (RS SO 1V Vista, Calif./Rancho Buena Vista HS) in 14th (18:17) and Taylor Dutch (JR SQ Newport Beach, Calif./Orange Lutheran HS) in 25th (18:50).

In the team standings, Cal totaled 40 points, followed by UC Davis with 50 and Sac State with 73.

On the men's side, UC Davis claimed the team title with 26 points, with Sac State second (52) and Cal third (177).

Collin Jarvis (SO 1V Vista, Calif./Rancho Buena Vista HS) was the Bears' top runner, covering four miles in 20:20. Freshman Jordan Locklear (FR HS Lumberton, N.C./American Indian (CA) HS) crossed 12th in 20:31 and J.P. Slater (RS FR Pasadena, Calif./Loyola HS) was 18th in 21:04. Andres Diaz (SO SQ Eagle Rock, Calif./Loyola HS) (21st, 21:19), J.J. Solorzano (FR HS Northridge, Calif./Granada Hills Charter HS) (23rd, 21:25) and Renaud Poizat (SO 1V Arcadia, Calif./Arcadia HS) (30th, 21:45),

Cal takes the next week off before competing in the Stanford Invitational Sept. 25 when more of the Bears top runners, such as Deborah Maier (JR 2V Cameron Park, Calif./Ponderosa HS), Michael Coe (RS SR 3V Lompoc, Calif./Cabrillo HS) and Steve Sodaro (RS SR 3V Tiburon, Calif./Redwood HS), are expected to suit up.
