April 6, 2010
NEW ORLEANS – The U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) released updated national team rankings and the first edition of the regional team index for the 2010 outdoor track & field season in Division I on Tuesday morning. Florida’s men remained at No. 1 after hosting the Pepsi Florida Relays while Texas A&M kept a firm lead in the women’s rankings following their run at the Texas Relays.
MEN: Florida Runs Top Time in 4x400 Relay and Widens Rankings Lead
The No. 1 Florida men (397.26) gained over 25 rankings points from past weekend performances at their own Florida Relays to widen its lead over No. 2 Texas A&M (339.32) in the national team rankings. Among Florida’s weekend highlights, the Gator 4x400-meter relay team of R.J. Anderson, Tony McQuay, Christian Taylor, and Calvin Smith clocked a world- and collegiate-leading 3:00.31 on Saturday night.
No. 3 Oregon’s (257.20) Ashton Eaton tallied a collegiate-leading 8,310 points in the decathlon at the Texas Relays. Eaton also is scored in the nation’s top 10 in the long jump, after marking a wind-aided personal best of 25-10¼ (7.88m) within his decathlon run.
Texas Tech (226.65) moved up a spot to No. 4 this week with new Red Raiders adding to the team’s tally. Florida State (220.68) dropped to No. 5 while the next three spots, No. 6 Southern California, No. 7 Auburn, and No. 8 LSU remain unchanged. South Carolina jumped into the national top 10 to land at No. 9 while Arizona State dropped to No. 10.
The SEC continues their dominance of the top 25 with eight members listed among the nation’s best. The Big 12 has six members in the national team rankings while the Pac-10 has five.
WOMEN: Texas A&M Ups Their Stock After Texas Relays
Top-ranked Texas A&M (364.06) showed why they are nation’s defending outdoor champions last weekend at the Texas Relays. The Aggies, who set the collegiate record in the 4x100-meter relay last season (42.36), clocked 42.56 this past weekend for a Texas Relays meet record and championship. In addition, junior Gabby Mayo notched an 11.13 time in the 100-meter dash for the second best in the NCAA this year.
Brianne Theisen of No. 2 Oregon (268.77) won the heptathlon at the Texas Relays with a collegiate-leading score of 5,942. No. 3 LSU (263.64) stood their ground and added a six-foot high jump to their crew as junior Brittani Carter cleared 6-½ (1.84m) this past weekend at the Texas Relays.
Florida State moved up to No. 4 as freshman Marecia Pemberton clocked a wind-aided 11.20 this weekend for the NCAA’s fourth-best time of the season. Florida moved down to No. 5, but senior Shara Proctor did notch the nation’s second-best long jump of the early season with a 21-9 (6.63m) leap.
Penn State surged eight spots up the ladder to No. 6 while Baylor moved over to No. 7. Southern California, Oklahoma, and Virginia Tech round out the top 10 taking spots eight, nine, and ten, respectively.
The SEC and Pac-10 share the conference top spot with six members apiece in the national top 25. The Big 12 claims five in the wake and the ACC has four.
