Golden Bears Travel to Seattle for UW Indoor Meet

SEATTLE, Wash. - Michael Morrison, Kyle Mills-Bunje and Kevin Kuechler each completed in first four events of the heptathlon Friday at the UW Invitational. After the first day, Mills-Bunje stood in second place with 3,170 points, followed by Morrison in third with 3,126 and Kuechler in 10th with 2,723. Former Cal volunteer assistant coach Mark Jellison, competing unattached, was the overall leader with 3,223 points.

Morrison started strong with a time of 7.07 seconds in the 60 meters, which was the second-fastest time of the day behind Robert Robinson's 7.03 seconds. Mills-Bunje was third in 7.15 and Kuechler 16th in 7.40.

Morrison then had the best mark of the day in the long jump, scoring 891 points with a leap of 24-0.25. Mills-Bunje (22-11.25) and Kuechler (22-4.50) both cleared 22 feet and placed fourth and fifth, respectively.

In the shot put, Mills-Bunje recorded the top throw with a mark of 46-9. Morrison was seventh at 40-0.75 and Kuechler 12th at 37-11.25.

In the first day's final event, Mills-Bunje was again Cal's top scorer, gaining 785 points for his clearance of 6-6, which was good for third among the 24 competitors. Morrison took seventh at 6-4.75 and Kuechler 13th at 5-10.75.

Morrison, a junior, is a transfer from Florida, where he earned All-American honors at the NCAA indoor championships in the heptathlon in 2008 by finishing third with 5,792 points.

Both Mills-Bunje and Kuechler last completed a heptathlon on the same track during the 2009 MPSF meet. Mills-Bunje placed third with 5,224 points, while Kuechler tied for seventh with 4,883 points.

The trio will conclude the heptathlon Saturday with the final three events - 60-meter hurdles, pole vault and 1000 meters. They will be joined by a full contingent of Golden Bears in both track and field events.
