Kaufman Wins High Jump At UW Preview; Qualifies For NCAAs

SEATTLE, Wash. – University of Hawai‘i’s Amber Kaufman (Branham High School, San Jose won the high jump competition at the University of Washington Indoor Preview Saturday at Dempsey Indoor. The meet was the 2010 season opener for the Rainbow Wahine track and field team.
Fresh off an All-American season with the women’s volleyball team, Kaufman cleared 6-1.5 (1.87m) to win the top flight among 19 athletes. The height surpassed the NCAA automatic qualifying mark of 6-0.75 (1.85m) and means she will compete in the NCAA Indoor Championship for the second consecutive year.
Last season, Kaufman placed sixth at indoor nationals and is the reigning Western Athletic Conference champion. During the outdoor season, the San Jose, Calif., native captured the bronze medal at outdoor nationals, becoming the first UH athlete to medal at the national championships in 25 years.
Kaufman was among a UH contingent of 16 athletes – including seven freshman – competing at the UW Preview. The event attracted more than 1,000 men and women athletes from schools throughout the West Coast.
The Rainbow Wahine return to Honolulu to host the first Sunset Series meet of the season, Jan. 22-23, at the Clarence T.C. Ching Field.
