LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The University of Louisville received three of the four BIG EAST weekly track and field honors on Tuesday. Redshirt senior Jere' Summers was named BIG EAST Female Field Athlete of the Week, redshirt senior Andre Black earned BIG EAST Male Field Athlete of the Week and freshman Howard Shepard III collected BIG EAST Male Track Athlete of the Week.
U of L opened the New Year at the Indiana Open in Bloomington on Jan. 9, boasting four NCAA Championships provisional qualifying marks and one school record.
Summers led the No. 18 ranked Cardinal women as she set two BIG EAST qualifying marks and two NCAA provisional standards with a first-place distance of 67-05.50 (15.27m) in the weight throw and a second-place distance of 50-01.25 (20.56m) in the shot put.
On the men's side, Black also set BIG EAST-qualifying and NCAA provisional marks with a first-place 51-11.00 (15.82m) leap in the triple jump. Shepard wrapped up the Louisville award contingent with a pair of runner-up finishes. He secured second place in the 800-meter dash with a time of 1:57.43, while also participating as a member of the 4x400-meter relay team which placed second in 3:19.98.
The Cards have now won 10 BIG EAST Indoor Weekly Awards, including seven a year ago. U of L has collected a staggering 19 total BIG EAST Indoor and Outdoor Weekly Awards since its inception in 2009.
Louisville will return to action this weekend, Jan. 15-16, at the Kentucky Invitational in Lexington, Ky.
