LOUISVILLE, Ky. - With a little more than a month left in the season, University of Louisville track and field athletes continue to excel as redshirt senior Jere' Summers (Berkeley High School; Cal State Northridge) earned her second BIG EAST Female Field Athlete of the Week honor, while junior Matt Bruce was named BIG EAST Male Track Athlete of the Week.
Summers' performance at the Notre Dame Invitational on Jan. 23 included setting a school record and establishing herself in the top-five nationally in two events. The Oakland, Calif. native set the Louisville record in the shot put with a first-place toss of 54-08.75 (16.68m), the nation's fourth-longest throw this season and tops among BIG EAST competitors. Her 6711 (20.70m) distance in the weight throw earned second place, ranks third nationally and is fifth-best in U of L history. Both distances were NCAA provisional-qualifying marks.
Bruce also found success at the Notre Dame Invitational, winning the mile in 4:06.78. The finish marked the fastest time in the BIG EAST this season. He also placed fourth in the 3,000-meter run in 8:15.76. Bruce's marks both met BIG EAST-qualifying standards.
This marks the third consecutive week that U of L has received honors and they have now collected seven BIG EAST Indoor Weekly Awards this season, matching a school best from a year ago.
The Cards will return to action this weekend, Jan. 29-30, at the Rod McCravy Invitational in Lexington, Ky.
