Team USA stars win in Stockholm

Tyson Gay, Allyson Felix, Jeremy Wariner, Christin Wurth-Thomas, Jenny Barringer and Jesse Williams were all victorious in their respective events Friday at the 2009 DN Galan meet in the Swedish capital of Stockholm. An IAAF Super Grand Prix status meet, the DN Galan is the final stop on the IAAF World Athletics Tour prior to the 2009 World Outdoor Championships, August 15-23, in Berlin, Germany.

American record holder Tyson Gay continued his 100m supremacy this season by winning this evening in 9.79 seconds (+2.6 mps). Gay posted the fastest time in the world this season of 9.77 seconds in Rome on July 10. 2008 Olympic finalist Darvis "Doc" Patton was the runner-up in 9.95 seconds, with former world record holder Asafa Powell of Jamaica third in 9.98.

Two-time World Outdoor women's 200m champion Allyson Felix showed she's ready to take on the world's best sprinters in Berlin by winning her race convincingly in 21.88 seconds, which is the fastest time in the world this year. Felix's performance easily bettered the previous world-leader of 22.32 by2008 Olympic finalist Debbie Ferguson McKenzie of the Bahamas, who was the runner-up today in 22.23. 2008 Olympic Games fifth-place finisher Marshevet Hooker finished fourth in 22.84.

Reigning men's 400m world champion Jeremy Wariner won his specialty in 44.83 seconds, with Great Britain's Michael Bingham the runner-up in 45.49. 2007 men's 400m hurdles world champion Kerron Clement finished third in 45.83.

2008 Olympian Christin Wurth-Thomas, who became only the fourth American woman to run a sub-4:00-minute time in the 1,500m (3:59.98) on Friday, July 10 at the Golden Gala in Rome, defeated nine other competitors today with her time of 4:03.01. 2009 USA Outdoor and 2008 Olympic Trials champion Shannon Rowbury was the runner-up in 4:05.47.

American record holder and two-time U.S. 3,000m steeplechase champion Jennifer Barringer was the winner in the women's 5,000 meters, crossing the finish line first in a personal best time of 15:05.25. Barringer barely beat out Russia's Natalya Popkova, who finished as the runner-up in 15:05.95.

In field event action, 2008 Olympic Trials champion Jesse Williams won the men's high jump with a clearance of 2.30 meters/7 feet 6.50 inches, and runner-up performances were turned in by 2007 World Outdoor champion Reese Hoffa in the men's shot put (21.53m/70-7.75) and by two-time USA Outdoor champion Michelle Carter (19.13m/62-9.75), who posted her best toss this season in the women's shot.


2008 Olympian and 2009 world list leader LoLo Jones was the runner-up in the women's 100m hurdles in 12.52 seconds, and Joel Brown finished as the runner-up to world record holder and Olympic gold medalist Dayron Robles of Cuba in the men's 110m hurdles, 13.11 - 13.38.
