California Sprinter Signs with Washington State Track & Field
Speedster adds to highly talented class of incoming track and field athletes for Cougars.

PULLMAN, Wash. -- Greg Hornsby, Jr., an outstanding high school sprinter from California, has signed a National Letter of Intent to compete for Washington State University starting in the fall of 2009, Cougar Track & Field Head Coach Rick Sloan announced Thursday.

Hornsby hails from Moreno Valley, Calif., and graduated from Rancho Verde High in May of this year. He has run the 100m dash in a time of 10.69 seconds and the 200m in a time of 21.41 seconds. He placed eighth in the 200m at the state meet after being the runner-up in the 200m at the CIF Division I meet. Hornsby was a strong contributor to the success of the Rancho Verde High relay teams with the 4x400m relay winning the CIF title after taking third at the prestigious Penn Relays, and the 4x100m relay going undefeated and winning the league title. The RV Mustangs boys team was runner-up in the CIF team standings this spring. His older sister, Jessika Hornsby, is a sprinter on the San Diego State women's track and field team. Hornsby also competed for the Moreno Valley Rockets Track Club and coach Al Phannix.

"Greg is a very talented sprinter who will help us in a lot of different areas on the track. I am confident he will score in the conference as a freshman in the short sprints and help us significantly on both relays," WSU Assistant Coach and sprints/relays mentor Ellannee Richardson said. "With Leavitt, Williams and Woods graduating this year, it became critical for us to find more legs for our relays. Greg is the type of athlete that can step in as a freshman and fill these holes for us. I watched him split low 47 at the California state meet on the 4x4 and I was amazed at the amount of determination and relaxation that he ran with. Greg comes from one of the best sprint programs in the state of California, Rancho Verde High. He has great experience competing against a high level of competition, which will help his transition into the Pac-10 conference. His coaches describe him as a team player, great leader and dedicated student. He will go very far and have a lot of success within our program with these traits."

Alyssa Andrews, distance runner from Gig Harbor, Wash. - State 4A cross country champion, did not compete during spring track
Caroline Austin, distance runner from Chehalis, Wash. - At state 2A 800m took 5th (prelim time of 2:15.89), 7th in 1600m (5:16.57), and on relay teams - 4x400m (5th, 4:08.74) and 4x200m (6th, 1:48.54)
Brett Blanshan, sprinter from Selah, Wash. - Set state 2A meet record in 100m dash with prelim time of 10.67 (won final in 10.60w), won 200m in 21.70w, 4x100m relay champions (43.47), Named Yakima Valley Male Track Athlete of the Year
Shawna Fermin, a quartermiler and long jumper from Victorville, Calif. - PR time in 400m is 55.16
Andrew Gonzalez, distance runner Kennewick, Wash. - Ran PR in 3200m of 9:10.59; 4th at state 4A meet in 3200m (9:13.48)
Andrew Kimpel, distance runner from Spokane, Wash. - At state 3A meet, won 3200m (9:08.39), 3rd in 1600m (4:15.62); lowered PR at 3A Regional meet to 4:14.20 in 1600m, and at Shoreline in 3200m of 9:04.82
Shaquana Logan, a hurdler from Tacoma - Won state 4A 100m hurdles title with a PR time of 14.19w
Holly Parent, high jumper from Victoria, British Columbia, Canada - PR high jump of 5-10 3/4 (1.80m)
Christine Rice, high jumper from Ridgefield, Wash. - Won state 4A high jump clearing 5-feet, 10 inches
Cindy Robinson, sprinter from Norwalk, Calif. - Lifetime best times of 11.96 in 100m and 24.32w in 200m
Stephan Scott-Ellis, triple jumper from Tacoma - PR distance of 50-5 1/4 (15.37m), finished 12th in the 2009 USA Track & Field Junior Championships
Dana Wells, intermediate hurdler from Yakima, Wash. - Won state 2B titles in boys 110m hurdles, 300m hurdles and 4x100m relay
Courtney Zalud, middle distance runner from Colbert, Wash. - At state 3A meet, 3rd in 800m (2:16.67), 12th in 1600m, 4x400m relay 6th
