Americans looking to dominate at Pan American Junior Champs
INDIANAPOLIS - The 2009 Pan American Junior Athletics Championship will showcase many of the top international junior athletes, July 31-August 2 in Trinidad and Tobago.
Held at Hasley Crawford Stadium in Port of Spain, Trinidad, the Pan Am Junior Athletics Championships are open to athletes age 16 to 19 as of December 31, 2009.
Last month's U.S. Junior Outdoor Track & Field Championship in Eugene, Ore. served as the U.S. selection meet for the Pan Am Championships. Eugene featured some of the top junior athletes in the country and the top finishers will represent the red, white and blue in Trinidad. This year's Team USA squad will look to best the 48 medals won by Team USA at the 2007 Pan Am Junior Athletics Championships.
Leading Team USA in Trinidad will be USA Junior champions Chalonda Goodman, Curtis Beach, Trevor Barron and Jordan Hasay.
Three-time Nike Outdoor National 100m and 200m champion Chalonda Goodman won the windy competition at the USA Junior Championships with a speedy time of 11.19 seconds (+2.8mps) in the 100m, and 22.74 (+2.6mps) in the 200m. Goodman will be a force to be reckoned with in both the 100m and 200m, as well as the 4x100m.
Curtis Beach won the men's decathlon with a meet-record 7,599 points, breaking Donovan Kilmartin's previous mark of 7,440 set June 19, 2002. The Albuquerque, N.M. native was named the 2009 Gatorade National Boys Track & Field Athlete of the Year and is the first decathlete so honored.
Trevor Barron of Bethel Park, Penn., handily won the men's 10,000m race walk crossing the line in 43:36:38; finishing two minutes ahead of his closest competitor at the Junior Championship. Barron went on to set an American Junior record of 42:22.79 at the 2009 IAAF World Youth Championship in finishing in fourth place.
2008 USATF Youth Athlete of the Year Jordan Hasay will look to add to her already impressive resume with a win in the 1,500m at the Pan Am Championship. The Arroyo Grande, Calif., native won her third-consecutive U.S. junior women's 1,500m title, with a time of 4 minutes 18.99 seconds.
