VENZON, KINLOCH (SACRAMENTO STATE) WIN EVENTS AT BRONCO INVITATIONAL

 

BOISE, Idaho — Elizabeth Venzon finished first in the women's high jump and James Kinloch had the top mark in the men's weight throw to lead Sacramento State at the Bronco Invitational on Saturday. Along with the two first place finishes, the team also saw several standout performances from freshmen who were making their collegiate debut.

Venzon cleared 5-07.25 to set her career best and move into fourth place in school indoor history. Fellow Hornet Candice Dominguez also matched the height to set her PR but finished third in the meet based on jumps. Kinloch recorded a career best of 57-07.00 to win the weight throw. That distance was 10.25 inches beyond his previous best and ranks as the seventh longest in school history.

Sprinter Eric Adorno posted career bests in his two events for the men. Adorno ran 6.95 in the 60 to place fifth in the meet and was third in the 200 with a time of 21.97. Both of those marks moved him into ninth place in the Hornet record book.

Two freshmen on the men's team also worked their way into the school top 10. Mohamed Abdullah was second in the triple jump with a distance of 48-07.50 which the was the fifth best by a Hornet all-time indoors. Despite an 8 a.m. Mountain Time start this morning Daniel Onuoha placed third in the men's high jump after clearing 6-08.75. Onuoha is now tied for sixth in Sacramento State's top 10.

On the women's side, Danielle Brandon cleared 12-11.50 to finish second in the pole vault and move into third place in Hornet history. Freshman Jelaia Jones was fourth in the shot put at 44-07.50 to record the ninth best mark by a Sacramento State woman indoors.

Overall, the Hornet women accounted for 16 top-five finishes at the meet. Along with the ones mentioned above, Nirie Boglino was fourth in the triple jump and fifth in the long jump, Joy Weems was third in the 200 and Hannah Edwards with third in the 800. Stephanie Blumm (second), freshman Olivia Leavitt (fourth) and Kassandra Corrigan (fifth) ranked among four Sacramento State runners in the finals of the 60-hurdles. Leavitt also finished fifth in the 60. Miranda Dumas and Siobhan Anderson finished fourth and fifth in the pole vault after each cleared 11-11.75.

The men had 11 top-five finishes. Adorno was joined on the track by Adam Huynh who was fifth in the 400 and Edwardo Vasquez who was fifth in the 800. In the field events, Cory Barger was second in the long jump at 22-09.75. Gathunga Ndirangu triple jumped 45-09.00 to finish in fourth place. Steven Pust cleared 16-02.75 to finish second in the pole vault and Richard Casas was second in the shot put at 52-10.00.

Sacramento State will next compete at UW Invitational beginning on Friday, Jan. 29.
