A new era of California track & field also began in 2000 when the Golden Bears returned to campus at Edwards Stadium/Goldman Field after a year away while the facility underwent a $3.5 million renovation project. With a seating capacity of 22,000, Edwards Stadium for years had the distinction of being the largest exclusive track & field facility in the United States.

The improvements for Edwards Stadium were spearheaded by a lead gift of $1.5 million from alumni Richard and Rhoda Goldman. In recognition of their tremendous contribution, the field at the stadium was renamed Goldman Field in honor of Richard's father, Richard Samuel Goldman ('09).

San Rafael High Boys Win State Cross Country TitleEhlenbach leads Bulldogs to Division IV crown in Fresno on Saturday.

Jason Jacobson knew he had a talented group of senior runners on this San Rafael High cross country team at the start of the season. He thought a league championship was a strong possibility and a section crown was within reach. But a state title? The first Marin County Athletic League to win a California Interscholastic Federation divisional team championship?

The format of the 21st annual race featured mixed teams of men and women running six alternating legs totaling 42.195 km.

Kenya took the runner-up spot in 2:08:06 and host team Japan was third in 2:08:12. Russia was fourth in 2:09:35.

Bobby Curtis (Ardmore, Pa.) led off with the opening 5 km leg, running 13:36, putting Team USA in fourth. Stephanie Pezzullo (Charlotte, N.C.) ran the second 5 km leg in 16:28, as the U.S. slipped to fifth. Ed Moran (Flagstaff, Ariz.) then took the sash to cover the 10 km third leg in 29:50, and Kim Conley (West Sacramento, Calif.), ran the 5 km fourth leg in 16:41 maintaining Team USA's fifth-place position. On the fifth leg, Aaron Braun (Flagstaff, Ariz.) turned in a 29:33 10 km, to move Team USA into fourth as he turned the sash over to Meghan Armstrong (Minneapolis, Minn.). Despite Armstrong's solid 24:46 for the final 7.195 km leg, Team USA was overtaken by Russia for fourth.

Brooks Johnson named Nike Coach of the Year

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

INDIANAPOLIS – Brooks Johnson, who coached David Oliver to a #1 world ranking, has been named the 2010 Nike Coach of the Year by USA Track & Field. Johnson will be honored on Saturday, December 4 at the Jesse Owens Awards and Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony, held at the Virginia Beach Convention Center in Virginia Beach, Va. The event is held in conjunction with USA Track & Field's 2010 Annual Meeting.

After a seven-year #1 World ranking drought in the men’s 110m hurdles, America is back on top thanks to Brooks Johnson’s continued work with David Oliver. In 2010, Johnson’s tutelage led Oliver to win the bronze medal at the World Indoor Championships and claim a 15-race unbeaten streak that saw Oliver first tie, and then break, the American record while winning a national championship and the Diamond League’s inaugural title.

Oliver became the world's best high hurdler in 2010 by winning nearly everything in sight and posting the five fastest times in the world (and 12 of the top 15 times globally) during the outdoor season, which included his pending American record 12.89 clocking from his win in Paris on July 16.

“It’s obviously good to receive recognition for your work,” said Johnson. “But any success is a collaboration and there are too many other people involved in this success to name.”

A former head coach at Stanford University (1979-92) and California Polytechnic State University (1993-96), Johnson has been coaching at the Olympic level for nearly a half-century. In 1960, he worked with his first Olympian, 110-meter hurdles silver medalist Willie May, and has coached an athlete at every Olympics since 1968. Johnson started working with Oliver in 2004 after he graduated from Howard University. Since then, he has guided Oliver to a bronze medal victory at the 2008 Olympic Games and through an injury-riddled 2009.

"Brooks enjoyed an extraordinary season in 2010, and Nike is pleased to present this award to such a deserving coach,” said John Capriotti, Global Sports Marketing Director for Nike. "With David having such a terrific season it shows that Brooks is able to bring out the best in his athletes, and he's very passionate about his craft. I congratulate him on a fine job, he has earned this award and recognition."
