Academy of Art's Thomas, Stillman's Henderson Earn DII High Point Honors

May 30, 2013

NEW ORLEANS – Vashti Thomas of the Academy of Art and Jeffrey Henderson of Stillman have been named the High Point Athletes of the Meet for their performances at the NCAA Division II Outdoor Track & Field Championships, the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) announced Thursday.

The High Point Athlete of the Meet award is given to one student-athlete of each gender who compiles the highest point total at the NCAA Division II Outdoor Track & Field Championships.

Thomas, a senior from San Jose, Calif. who also won High Point honors for the indoor championships, scored 36¼ points in four individual events and two relays to lead Academy of Art to its first DII outdoor team championship with 60 team points and a sweep of the 2013 track & field titles. She claimed individual titles in the 100 hurdles in 12.70 (+1.8m/s), a new DII record and tied for the No. 10 mark in collegiate history; and the long jump with a mark of 21-2¼ (6.47m). She finished runner-up at 200 meters in 22.75 (-0.7m/s), tied for the second-fastest time in Division history; and third in the triple jump at 42-3½ (12.89m). She also ran legs of the runner-up 4×100 relay and the eighth-place 4×400 relay.

Henderson, a junior at Stillman, won a pair of individual titles and finished runner-up in another event for a total of 28 points. He claimed the long jump by more than half a foot at 25-7½ (7.81m), and also won on the track at 100 meters in 10.18 (-0.4m/s) after running a 10.20Q (+1.2m/s) in the prelims. He finished his weekend with a runner-up showing at 200 meters in 20.65 (+0.2m/s).

DIII Championships' Most Outstanding Performers Announced

May 30, 2013

NEW ORLEANS – Sean Bernstein of Oneonta State, Isaac Vazquez of UW-La Crosse, Christy Cazzola of UW-Oshkosh and Melissa Norville of Illinois College have been named the Outstanding Performers of the Meet for the Division III Indoor Track & Field Championships, the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) announced Tuesday.

Four total awards are given to track performers and field performers for both men and women based on a point system that includes: the number of points scored at the championships, setting a meet record (five bonus points), setting a DIII season’s best (three bonus points) and a setting facility record (one bonus point). Total relay points will be divided by four.

Cazzola (42 points) earned women’s track performer honors with three individual wins on the track at 800, 1500 and 5000 meters, becoming the first DIII woman to accomplish that triple at one NCAA Championships meet. In addition to the 30 team points she scored in winning the events, she gained five bonus points for a meet-record 2:05.93 at 800 meters, three apiece for DIII season’s bests at 1500 meters in 4:17.22 and 5000 meters in 16:31.17 — the latter of which was a facility record for an additional point — for a total of 42 points.

Norville (29 points) claimed the women’s field performer honor with two individual wins in the field in the long jump and the triple jump — which, combined with her 100 hurdles win, makes her the fifth woman in DIII history to win three events at one outdoor championships and the first to complete that triple. In addition to the 20 team points from those two field events she contributed toward Illinois College’s sixth-place team finish, she added an additional nine bonus points for her winning long jump performance of 20-5w (6.22m, +4.1m/s).

Bernstein (23.5 points) took home the honor for men’s track performer with a title defense at 200 meters in 20.81 (-1.2m/s), a runner-up showing at 100 meters by less than a hundredth of a second in 10.77 (-3.2m/s), and leg of the winning 4×100 relay for 20.5 team points toward Oneonta State’s sixth-place team finish. His performance at 200 meters was a DIII season’s best for an additional three points, which broke a tie between Bernstein and UW-Eau Claire’s Thurgood Dennis — fitting because the two went back and forth all weekend in the sprints.

Vazquez (21 points) was named the men’s field performer winner after a win in the long jump with a DIII-best 25-4¾ (7.74m) and a runner-up showing in the triple jump 50-5½ (15.38m). His 18 team points from field events — in addition to his contributions as a member of the third-place 4×100 relay team — contributed significantly to UW-La Crosse taking home the men’s team title. Vazquez tied Defiance thrower Tom Postema with 18 points from the field events, but Vazquez’s DIII season’s best in the long jump was the tie-breaker.

Jones, a sophomore from Wilmington, N.C., won an NCAA Division II individual title at 200 meters and ran a leg of the winning and all-time DII record-setting 4×100 relay team, along with a third-place run at 100 meters, in helping the Falcons to the team title. Jones pulled away down the stretch of the 200 to claim the win in 20.57 (+0.2m/s), and ran the anchor leg on a pair of DII 4×100 relay records. The Falcons ran 39.01 during Friday’s prelims to break the DII record, and ran a 38.91 in Saturday’s finals to break it again. He finished third at 100 meters in the finals at 10.34 (-0.4m/s).

During the regular season Jones claimed both the 100 and 200 meter titles at the CIAA Championships, and also ran a leg of the winning 4×100 relay. He was named the CIAA meet’s Most Valuable Performer for his performance.

Williams, a junior from St. Andrew, Jamaica, turned in a pair of all-time performances in winning both the 100 and 200 meters at the NCAA Division II Outdoor Championships, in addition to a runner-up showing in the 100 hurdles. She blazed to the win at 200 meters in an all-time Division II record 22.62 (-0.7m/s) after having run a 22.63w (+5.4m/s) during the prelims. Her win at 100 meters came in 11.24 (-0.7m/s), giving her the win by more than a quarter of a second and the No. 4 wind-legal mark in division history. Her runner-up performance in the 100 hurdles in 12.89 (+1.8m/s) makes her the third-fastest performer in DII history.

She did not lose a final at either 100 or 200 meters throughout the duration of the outdoor season, including CIAA titles at 100 and 200 meters and the 4×100 relay to go along with a second-place 100 hurdles finish.

A junior from Santa Barbara, Calif., Smith claimed the NCAA Division II title in the decathlon by 225 points with a score of 7612 after winning two components and finished top-three in five others. He won the 100 meters component in 10.68w (+3.0m/s) and the long jump by nearly a foot at 24-7¼w (7.50m, +2.9m/s). In the process of winning the event he took down the top seed in runner-up Justin Balczak of LSSU and the 2011 champion in Central Missouri’s Brent Vogel — the indoor National Men’s Field Athlete of the Year.

He reached the auto-qualifying mark in the decathlon in his first attempt this season, scoring 7035 at the Chico Multi-Event Classic in late February/early March. Contributed 28½ points between six individual events and a 4×100 relay win at the CCAA Championships en route to a team CCAA title.

Lockhart, a senior from Lansing, Mich., established herself among the best throwers in both Division II history and the 2013 collegiate landscape with a season that culminated in NCAA Division II titles in the discus and the shot put, and a third-place finish in the hammer throw. Her first title came in the discus, which she won with a championships-record mark of 190-7 (58.08m) by nearly 20 feet. She also won the shot put with a mark of 54-11½ (16.75m) to win by more than four feet. She started her weekend with a third-place finish in the hammer throw at 194-7 (59.30m).

Lockhart, who went undefeated in 12 shot put and discus events, earned USTFCCCA National Athlete of the Week honors three times this outdoor season after breaking the all-time discus record two times and moving to No. 2 all-time in the shot put and No. 8 in the hammer throw. She first set the discus record at 192-9 (58.75m), before two weeks later breaking it at 193-2 (58.87m) at the GLIAC Championships. That same week she moved to No. 2 all-time in the shot put with a GLIAC-winning mark of 55-1½ (16.80m) and No. 7 in the hammer at 201-8 (61.48m).

Division III Outdoor National Athlete Awards Announced

May 29, 2013

NEW ORLEANS – The U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) announced the National Athlete of the Year award winners for 2013 NCAA Division III Outdoor Track & Field season as chosen by the nation’s coaches. Sean Bernstein of Oneonta State, Tim VanLiew of Rutgers-Camden, Christy Cazzola of UW-Oshkosh and Melissa Norville of Illinois College earned the distinctions of National Athletes of the Year for the 2013 outdoor season.

Bernstein, a senior from Baldwinsville, New York, claimed two total titles at the Division III Outdoor Championships at 200 meters and as a member of the 4×100 relay, in addition to finishing runner-up at 100 meters. He won at 200 meters in 20.81 to defend his title from 2012.

He was named the SUNYAC Outdoor Track Athlete of the Year after winning three events at the conference championships at 100 and 200 meters and in the 4×100 relay. In 12 total finals between both 100 and 200 meters, he has lost just once during the 2013 outdoor season — that coming by less than a hundredth of a second in the NCAA Championships 100 — and he is undefeated in five finals at 200 meters.

Cazzola, a junior from Kaukauna, Wis., became just the fourth woman in Division III history to win three individual titles at one NCAA DIII Outdoor Championships meet, claiming titles at 800, 1500 and 5000 meters all within three hours of one another on Saturday — the first to accomplish that triple in one meet.

She won at 1500 meters in 4:17.22, the No. 2 time in division history, to edge out St. Thomas (Minn.)’s Taylor Berg with the Division’s all-time third-fastest time at 4:18.10. She then won at 800 meters in 2:05.93 — just shy of her No. 2 all-time mark in the event — to beat out Tara Clemens’ 2:06.79 — just shy of her own No. 4 all-time mark. She capped the day off with a come-from-behind victory at 5000 meters in the final 400 meters of the race to win in 16:31.17.

Her regular season also included WIAC titles at 800, 1500 and 5000 meters, as well as the 4×800. Prior to her 1500 performance at NCAAs, she had also run a 4:18.22 at the Mt. SAC Relays for a then-No. 2 time in DIII history.

VanLiew, a senior from Deptford, N.J., became the all-time farthest Division III javelin thrower (under the current javelin design) with a mark of 247-10 (75.55m) en route to an NCAA DIII title defense by more than 33 feet. He surpassed by more than five feet the previous record of 242-5 (73.90m) set in 1995 by Kris Theriault of Fitchburg State, and his is the farthest throw by a DIII student-athlete since 2000 by nearly 12 feet. In addition to his winning throw, he recorded three other throws that would have placed him among the all-time DIII top ten, including two farther than 70 meters.

Earlier in the regular season VanLiew had worked his way up to No. 8 in DIII history with a mark of 226-9 (69.11m) with a title at the NJAC Championships. As of publication his NCAA-winning throw catapulted him up to No. 6 among all collegians in the javelin for 2013. He also finished runner-up at the IC4A Championships among DI and DII with a mark of 224-0 (68.27m).

Norville, a senior from Batavia, Ill., became the fifth woman in Division III history to win three individual titles in one NCAA DIII Outdoor Championships after claiming the long jump, triple jump and 100 hurdles titles, and is the first in Division history to complete that trio of titles. Won the long jump title with a mark of 20-5w (6.22m, +4.1m/s) and claimed the triple jump at 41-11¼w (12.78m, +2.6m/s).

She was named Midwest Conference Female Athlete of the Year for the third consecutive season after posting Division III-leading marks in the long jump at 20-4¼ (6.20m) and the triple jump at 41-11½ (12.79m. She claimed Midwest Conference titles in each of the aforementioned events. She finished third at the Drake Relays in the long jump and fifth in the triple jump.

Tinsley, the 2012 Olympic silver medalist, recorded a season’s best mark crossing the finish line in 48.43 seconds. Tinsley edged out Olympic bronze medalist Javier Culson of Puerto Rico by a tenth of a second.

“I was just trying to stay relaxed and not tighten up after the last hurdle,” Tinsley said. “I knew that Javier [Culson] was in front of me and I wanted to catch him, but I knew I had to stay relaxed if I was going to do it.”

Tinsley posted his season’s best time despite light rain. His mark is the world’s third fastest in the 400m hurdles this year.

“It felt really good to win at the adidas Grand Prix, it really meant a lot to me to win at that meet,” Tinsley said. “Javier [Culson] and Johnny [Dutch] are doing really well this year, so to win this meet lets me know that my training is going really well.”

NCAA I PRELIMINARY ROUNDS -- NO WINNERS, JUST COMPETITION
Two giant meets with no champions crowned still saw a raft of good marks as the cream of the NCAA I crop gathered in Austin and Greensboro to fight for berths at the national championship meet in Eugene.

Among the top efforts were a 9.99 by Ole Miss Olympian Isiah Young in the heats of the East 100m and a U.S.-leading 81.90m/268-8 from Olympic Trials champ Sam Humphreys of Texas A&M in the West javelin.

TCU's Charles Silmon, the 2010 World Junior 100m silver medalist, swept the dashes in the West at 10.03m/20.23, and Elijah Greer clocked 1:46.20 for Oregon in the 800m.

Reigning World Junior champ Ashley Spencer of Illinois rolled to her second fastest time ever with a 50.88 in the 400m, while Stanford's Kori Carter (54.50) and Arizona Olympian Georganne Moline (54.59) waged another speedy battle in the 400m hurdles.

2012 Olympian and reigning NCAA indoor and outdoor champion Tia Brooks of Oklahoma scared the collegiate record in the women's shot put with her 18.96m/62-2.5 throw in the sixth round.

NCAA II CROWNS GO TO ST. AUGUSTINE'S, ACADEMY OF ART
St. Augustine's won its 11th NCAA II outdoor men's championship on the strength of a relay sweep, while Academy of Art captured the school's first women's national crown on the shoulders of hurdler/jumper Vashti Thomas.

Jermaine Jones won the 200m and anchored the Falcons to a sizzling 38.91 in the 4x100m, the first time a Division II school has dipped under 39 seconds.

Thomas zipped to a 12.70 to win the 100m hurdles and soared 6.47m/21-2.75 for long jump gold. For good measure she added a silver in the 200m at 22.75, and a bronze in the triple jump (12.89m/42-3.5)

LA CROSSE, WARTBURG TOPS IN NCAA DIVISION III
Long jumper Isaac Vazquez led the Wisconsin-La Crosse men to their 12th NCAA Division III national championship with his 7.74m/25-4.75 win, and Wartburg won a closely-contested women's team title with 46 points.

Wisconsin-Oshkosh had a triple-gold performance from Christy Cazzola, who took the 800m (2:05.93), 1500m (4:17.22) and 5000m (16:31.17) on the final day of the meet, but the Titans fell three points short of the championship.

Tim Van Liew of Rutgers-Camden shattered his personal record and the national meet record in the javelin with a massive 75.55m/247-10 toss on his second attempt.

INDIANA TECH SWEEPS NAIA TITLES
A nail-biting men's finish and a dominant women's performance gave Indiana Tech a sweep of the NAIA team titles, the school's first-ever national championships. The Warriors won only one men's event -- the 4x100m -- but a runner-up finish in the 4x400m to close the meet gave them a four-point edge over Oklahoma Baptist.

Adella King took the sprint double and ran on the winning 4x100m to help lead her squad to a winning margin of more than 30 points over OBU.

FELIX FLIES THROUGH STREETS OF MANCHESTER
It's a rarely-run distance, but Allyson Felix mastered the 150 meters at the Manchester Street Games in England, clocking the third-fastest time ever with her 16.36. Dawn Harper-Nelson was the other U.S. winner, taking the 100m hurdles in 12.94.

PERSONAL RECORD FOR NIXON IN GĂ–TZIS DEC
Former Arkansas star and American Junior record-holder Gunnar Nixon had a lifetime best 8,136 to take over the U.S. lead and finish third in the HypoMeeting decathlon at Götzis, Austria.

Humphreys Joins Final The Bowerman Men's Watch List
May 29. 2013

NEW ORLEANS – With NCAA Prelims rounds now complete, the NCAA Finals are fast approaching and will be stacked with members of the final The Bowerman Watch List for the men, which was released Wednesday by the Watch List Committee.

Due to the nature of qualifying for the NCAA Finals, some Watch List members had a chance to shine at the Prelims — namely sprinters and throwers — while others had to forgo aiming for their best times/marks and make sure they qualified, including vertical jumpers and distance runners.

Among those who shined this weekend was Texas A&M javelin thrower Sam Humphreys, who makes his first career appearance on the Watch List after becoming the No. 7 collegiate performer in the event’s history with a top-qualifying mark of 268-8 (81.90m).

Mississippi’s Isiah Young also boosted his stock after becoming the first sub-10 collegian at 100 meters this season with a top-qualifying time of 9.99 (+0.3m/s).

With his 16th appearance on the Watch List, Arizona’s Lawi Lalang moved into a tie for second all-time with Washington State’s Jeshua Anderson. Kansas State’s Erik Kynard, making his 10th showing on the Watch List, joins Lalang as one of just six men who have appeared double-digit times. Right behind Kynard with nine career appearances is high jump rival Derek Drouin of Indiana.

The NCAA Finals will be held June 5-8 at Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore., after which the 10 The Bowerman men’s semifinalists will be announced Monday, June 17.

Former OSU Track And Field Head Coach Berny Wagner Passes Away

Former OSU Track And Field Head Coach Berny Wagner Passes Away

May 28, 2013

CORVALLIS, Ore. - Berny Wagner, head coach of Oregon State's track and field and cross country teams from 1965-75, passed away peacefully at the age of 88 in Corvallis on Monday with his family at his side.

Wagner developed 25 All-Americans in 12 different events at Oregon State. His Beaver teams included 10 NCAA national champions or open national champions and his OSU men's track teams finished in the top 10 at the NCAA Championships four times, including a tie for third in 1969.

Taking over the reins of Oregon State's cross country and track & field programs in 1965, Wagner's tenure included standouts such as 1968 Olympic gold medal winner Dick Fosbury and All-Americans Jim Barkley, Steve DeAutremont, Willie Turner, Tom Woods, Jim Judd, Hailu Ebba and Ed Lipscomb.

In 1969, behind the talented high jump trio of Dick Fosbury, Steve Kelly and John Radetich, Wagner's squad went undefeated in dual meets, beating powerhouses UCLA and Oregon. The team finished third at the NCAA championship, behind individual champions Fosbury (high jump), Barkley (steeplechase), and DeAutremont (hammer throw).

"To say that Berny had an everlasting effect on thousands upon thousands would be an understatement," current Oregon State head coach Kelly Sullivan said. "From a personal standpoint, the existence of OSU track and field and the Whyte Track and Field Center would not be a reality without Berny and the legacy that he, his athletes and staff left during their time here at Oregon State. He truly was an exceptional individual and one that only comes around once in a lifetime."

During his time at Oregon State, Wagner designed Patrick Wayne Valley Field, which served as the Beavers' home track from 1974-88.

Wagner's coaching career also included stops at a number of California high schools and the College of San Mateo prior to arriving at Oregon State. Other positions that Wagner held during his career include working with Whitaker Corporation's International Sports program in Saudi Arabia from 1976-78; serving as Executive Director of the Track & Field Association of the USA from 1978-81; and serving as National Coach/Coordinator of The Athletics Congress (forerunner to USATF) from 1981-89.

Among the other posts Wagner held are men's jumps coach for the 1976 U.S. Olympic Team; the U.S. Men's Track and Field Olympic Committee; the NCAA Track and Field Rules Committee; Special Olympics International's National Athletics staff for the U.S. Northwestern Region; technical advisor to the San Diego Olympic Training Center Foundation; consultant for Atlanta's Olympic bid preparation; advisory board for the Oregon Track Club; board of directors of the Oregon Indoor track meet, technical director for the 1990 Goodwill Games; chairman of the men's track and field committee for the Oregon Association of the Athletics Congress; and men's head coach of the U.S. squad that faced Great Britain in a 1992 indoor meet.

Wagner was born in Fresno, Calif., and earned his bachelor's degree in 1948 and master's degree in 1949 from Stanford in Education. He did graduate work at Stanford, San Jose State, Pacific (Calif.) and San Francisco State. Wagner served in the U.S. Navy and was stationed in the United States, the Pacific Theater and Japan prior to starting his coaching career.

After his retirement, Wagner continued to work as a volunteer coach working with high jumpers at Western Oregon, where he had three national champions and 15 All-Americans. Wagner was inducted into the OSU Athletic Hall of Fame in 1993 and the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 2002.

More information on services and family requests for ways to share condolences will be updated here as they become available.

USTFCCCA All-America honors are awarded to those who earn any portion of a team point at the national championships. Student-Athletes listed are participants in programs that are members of the USTFCCCA.

Vashti Thomas of the indoor/outdoor champion Academy of Art women’s team led all student-athletes with six All-America honors — championships in the long jump and 100 hurdles, runner-up showings in the 200 meters and 4×100 relay, third place in the triple jump and eighth in the 4×100 relay.

Two other women earned four honors apiece in 100, 200 and 4×100 champ Danielle Williams of Johnson C. Smith and Shavine Hodges of Grand Canyon

Ashland sprinter Joe Horn collected the most All-America honors on the men’s side with four, while eight other men earned three awards each. Men’s champion Saint Augustine’s and Lincoln (Mo.) both had a pair student-athletes with three All-America honors. For Saint Augustine’s it was 200/4×100 champ Jermaine Jones and 4×100 champ Taffawee Johnson, while for Lincoln it was 110h/400h champ Sabiel Anderson and Michael Ashley.

The Saint Augustine’s men won the meet by a wide margin, and they also claimed the highest number of All-America honors with 23 in total. Runner-up Ashland was next with 18, while Lincoln (Mo.) earned 12.

A testament to how closely contested the women’s competition was, neither champion Academy of Art (16) nor runner-up Johnson C. Smith (nine) claimed the most All-America awards. That honor is split three ways between Grand Valley State and Lincoln (Mo.) — who finished tied for third — and Grand Canyon at 17 All-Americans each.

The GLIAC was the best-represented conference on the men’s side with 37 awards, edging out the MIAA with 35 and the CIAA with 30. Conference competition on the women’s side was even closer, with the MIAA taking home 34 to the PacWest’s 33, with the GLIAC at 27 and the CIAA at 25.

USTFCCCA National Championships Central

USTFCCCA All-America honors are awarded to those who earn any portion of a team point at the national championships, or reach an eight-entrant final. Student-Athletes listed are participants in programs that are members of the USTFCCCA.

Fifteen student-athletes — 11 women and four men — earned three or more All-America honors apiece, led by 400 meters champ Ashante Little of Wheaton (Mass.) and 4×100 champ Jamie Ludwigson of UW-La Crosse with four apiece.

Especially notable among those nine who claimed three awards are three-time individual champions Christy Cazzola of UW-Oshkosh (800/1500/5000) and Melissa Norville of Illinois College (long jump/triple jump/100 hurdles). This marked the first time in the history of DIII women’s competition that two women earned three individual event titles in the same outdoor championship meet. They are the fourth and fifth women, respectively, to accomplish three championships in one NCAA outdoor meet.

Sean Bernstein of Oneonta State and Thurgood Dennis each had three All-America honors, with Bernstein winning at 200 meters over Dennis, who won at 100 meters over Bernstein. Bernstein’s 4×100 relay team took the title, as did Dennis’ 4×400 relay team. UW-La Crosse’s Isaac Vazquez took the long jump title to highlight his three All-America awards. Augustana (Ill.)’s Alex Rindone also earned a trio of All-America honors.

UW-La Crosse’s men’s and women’s programs both earned the highest number of honors for their respective sexes, with the champion men claiming 19 awards and the fifth-place women earning 10.

UW-Oshkosh claimed the second-most honors on the men’s side with 18, followed by UW-Eau Claire with 12, UW-Whitewater with 11 and Augustana (Ill.) at 10. As a result, the WIAC dominated the meet in terms of honors per conference with 64 to the CCIW’s 15.

With nine honors, the Williams women earned the second most, followed by Rowan and champion Wartburg with eight, UW-Eau Claire at seven and Ramapo, St. Thomas (Minn.) and Wheaton (Mass.) with six apiece.

The WIAC also led all conferences on the women’s side with 28 awards, but the gap between No. 1 and 2 was much smaller as the NESCAC claimed 21 honors.
