USC Wins Four More Events On Final Day Of The Conference Clash In Alabama

Eric Sloan won the men’s long jump, Ricky Morgan Jr. the men’s 400m, Amalie Iuel the women’s 400m and Mikaela Smith the women’s 800m during the final day of action at the Conference Clash hosted by Auburn and Tennessee at the CrossPlex in Birmingham, Alabama today (Jan. 23). On the first day of the meet Randall Cunningham won the men’s high jump and set the track record, giving the Trojans five event wins on the track which the 2016 NCAA Indoor Championships will be held. The junior Sloan set an indoor PR and won the long jump on his first jump, a leap of 25-9.25 (7.85m). Only one other competitor in the field jumped over 24 feet. His second jump went of 25-0.75 (7.64m) and his third was 25-2.50 (7.68m), both which would have won the title. He passed on his final three attempts. Sophomore Dominic Smallwood finished 16th with a best jump of 22-6.50 (6.87m). Morgan set a PR and school record in winning the men’s 400m race with a time of 46.68. The sophomore held the previous school indoor 400m record of 47.14, set last season. Redshirt freshman Zyaire Clemes finished 32nd with a time of 51.65. The junior Iuel won the women’s 400m dash with a complex-record time and PR of 52.94. Finishing second was senior Jaide Stepter with a time of 53.31, sophomore Kendall Ellis finished third with a time of 53.43 and junior Cameron Pettigrew finished 16th with a time of 55.66. The freshman Smith ran her first indoor race for the Trojans and won the women’s 800m with a time of 2:08.40. That time is a USC freshman indoor record and the fastest by a Trojans since Michelle Taylor set the school indoor record of 2:05.70 in 1990. Freshman Rachel Glynn finished 10th with a time of 2:13.22 and redshirt sophomore Rebekah Ent finished 11th with a time of 2:13.44. In the men’s 800m race, sophomore Robert Ford finished eighth with a time of 1:52.11 and sophomore Jordon Wallin placed 30th with a time of 1:58.11. Senior Alexis Faulknor placed fifth in the women’s 60m dash with a time of 7.37. There was just .11 seconds separating the top five finishers. Sophomore Adoree’ Jackson finished fourth in the men’s 60m dash with a time of 6.79 (6.789). He was .005 seconds out of third place and just 0.8 seconds separated the top four finishers. In the women’s 200m final, sophomores Deanna Hill finished fourth with a time of 23.54 and Gabriella Cantrell took fifth with a time of 23.92. USC’s three men to qualify for the 200m final, Clemes, Morgan and senior Just’N Thymes, did not run in the final. Senior Katerina Berdousi had an indoor PR of 4:59.73 to place fifth in her section of the women’s one-mile race and 16th overall. Freshman Trent Rule ran in the men’s 3000m race and placed 26th with a time of 8:52.15. USC’s women’s 4x400m relay of Ellis, Iuel, Stepter and Pettigrew ran 3:35.43 to finish third. In the other field events, freshman Margaux Jones placed fourth in the women’s long jump with a USC freshman record of 20-3.00 (6.17m). Her best just came in her last attempt as did all the Trojans, with Faulknor taking sixth with a jump of 19-11.50 (6.08m), Iuel setting an indoor PR of 19-3.25 (5.87m) to place 12th and freshman Lyndsey Lopes jumping 17-4.75 (5.30m) to finish 30th. Sophomore Nick Ponzio placed fourth in the men’s shot put with a best mark of 62-1.75 (18.94m), while freshman Matthew Katnik finished sixth with a best throw of 60-1.75 (18.33m). Sophomore Tanya Sapa was the only Trojan female in the shot put competition and she placed ninth with a best mark of 46-11.50 (14.31m). The Trojans will next be in action at the New Mexico Classic in Albuquerque, N.M. on Feb. 5-6.
