Track & Field Posts 14 More PR’s, 1 School Record at Indiana
Josh Province breaks the men’s weight throw mark to pace UC on final day at Gladstein
CINCINNATI - It was another record-breaking day of competition for the University of Cincinnati track and field program as Josh Province broke the men’s weight throw record on the final day of action at the Gladstein Invitational in Bloomington, Ind. Combined with the 14 personal-bests and 10 all-time UC Top 10 marks from today, the Bearcats posted 36 personal bests and 16 marks ranking among the best all-time in program history following the two day event hosted by Indiana.
Following Annette Echikunwoke’s women’s weight throw record one day before, Josh Province accomplished the same feat in the men’s event, hurling the 35-pound implement 19.47m (63-10.50). Province became just the second UC man to record a mark of 19-meters or better during competition.
Another big finish came in the fast section of the men’s 800m run where Michael Vitucci won the race in 1:51.69, recording the fifth-fastest time in program history and the 38th-best so far this season in the NCAA. And all of that came in his first collegiate race. Joining Vitucci on the top step of the podium was the women’s 4x400m relay, which ran the third-fastest time in school history. The quartet of Javette Lee, Bryana Robinson, Jada Grant and Kenya Woodall combined to take the race in 3:44.08 to reach UC’s No. 3 position.
// WOMEN’S RESULTS
- The women’s long jump competition came down to the wire as a pair of Bearcats posted personal-best marks to finish 2-3 in the event. Rebecka Abrahamsson, one day removed from crushing her own school record in the triple jump, returned to the runway and posted a leap of 5.86m (19-02.75) on her sixth and final attempt of the competition to not only take second in the meet, but also move into a tie for the third-best in UC history. Right behind her was Kellsa Mbah, who took third with a top mark of 5.85m (19-02.50), which moved her into a tie for fifth all-time in UC history.
- Similar to Abrahamsson, Echikunwoke returned to the circle one day after her school record in the weight throw and finished fourth in the shot put with a best of 14.92m (48-11.50). That toss moved her to No. 3 on UC’s list. Leah Heckaman also got into the record list movement as she climbed up to No. 6 with a toss of 14.64m (48-00.50) to take sixth place.
- Back on the track, Alexis Anton clocked in at 2:13.98 to finish second overall in the race and move to No. 7 on the all-time UC chart. Just behind her was teammate Meg Westerheide, who turned in a personal-best time of 2:16.87, less than one second from joining the school’s Top 10.
- Rookie Haisha Bisiolu bettered her 60m dash time for the third time in as many races, this time taking fifth in the finals at 7.67. Her time now has her seventh on the program’s lists. She also finished fourth in the 200m dash in 25.11.
// MEN’S RESULTS
- Along with Province’s big PR in the weight throw, two other field event competitors equalled or bettered their career bests in the high jump as Jordan Hardiman and Mike Wood finished sixth and seventh, respectively. Hardiman cleared 2.02m (6-07.50) to equal his PR while Wood got over 1.97m (6-05.50) to raise his best by 1cm.
- The two-day heptathlon came to a close with Alex Bloom scoring 4,981 points to finish sixth overall while collecting four personal-bests on the day. His overall score, which moved him to No. 4 on UC’s charts, was helped along by personal-bests in the 60m hurdles (8.98), the pole vault (4.10m/13-05.25) and the 1,000m run (2:55.49). Bloom currently stands 29th in the NCAA in the heptathlon.
- The 4x400m relay clocked in at 3:17.97 to finish third in the race to close out the meet for the Bearcats. The team consisted of Kevin Konkoly, Jaashir Morris, Jarrod Hart and Nathan Alexander with the fourth member keeping their opponents at bay with his split of 48.7.
The Bearcats will return to action next weekend in a return trip to Bloomington as they will compete in the Indiana Relays. The event runs Friday and Saturday inside the Gladstein Fieldhouse.
