1970 GWI 2 Miles

A LONG LONG TIME AGO
I can still remember how
that track meet used to make me smile.
Even Don McLean would have dug the Golden West Invitational ...particularly circa June 1970 (just a couple of months before he recorded American Pie) as the Irish kid from Essex Catholic of New Jersey, Mike Keogh, stalks his NYC rival, Denis Elton Cochran-Fikes, the pride of NYC's Rice HS, while eventual Tennessee Volunteer athlete turned coach, Doug Brown drafts in third.
...
Keogh would turn out the high school yearly leader on this day with a damn fine 8:54.0 (for a full 2 miles, not that weirdo 3200 crap) on a real (not synthetic) track at Sacramento's famed Hughes Stadium. Brown closed for second in 8:57.8 while the early leader workhorse, Fikes, hung on for 3rd just a smidge abve the nine minute barrier.
Five bucks if you can name the B side of this 45 without looking it up ;}

Arthur Lyons Three great runners of our era. Denis, sporting a cool late 60s Afro, was at his best distance at the grueling 2 mile race. Think of it ... two miles at a sub 4:30 per mile pace. Pretty great stamina these guys.
Arthur Lyons Ray Alter, Thought you would enjoy the news coverage of this race posted by Hank Lawson. Also talks of Tony Colon's win of the mile in 4:06.0
Kenneth Schappert All 3 great friends and competitors! rubbed sholders many times together.
