Saint Augustine's Men Reclaim No. 1 Spot in Division II Indoor National Team Rankings

NEW ORLEANS – Just one week after defending Division II men’s indoor champion Saint Augustine’s lost the No. 1 position in the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) DII National Team Computer Rankings to Adams State, the Falcons’ formidable corps of sprinters, hurdlers and jumpers have vaulted them back to the top.

Four nation-leading marks and a total 14 scored season-best performances this weekend at the Penn State National lifted Saint Augustine’s back to the No. 1 spot it held in the preseason, while Adams State dropped to No. 2.

The Division-leading marks by Joshua Edmonds (400 meters), Mousa Dembele (60-meter hurdles), the 4×400 relay and DeJon Wilkinson (triple jump), along with the 10 other season-best marks, improved the Falcons’ team rankings score by 39.89 points to 237.31.

Adams State, which defeated RMAC rival Western State in a dual, improved its team rankings score by just 2.4 points to 213.32.

No. 3 Ashland (153.06) held its position for the third consecutive edition of the rankings.

Three-time defending National Athlete of the Week Christopher Reed’s Minnesota State men (137.30) improved one spot to No. 4. Reed remained No. 1 in the shot put, but the biggest impact on the team’s ranking was second-ranked heptathlete Nathan Hancock in his 2014 multi-event debut.

Grand Valley State (111.49) fell a spot to No. 5 to round out the top five.

Missouri Southern (91.55) improved six spots to No. 6, while Pittsburg State (75.38) jumped three to No. 7 and Southern Indiana (73.01) soared 12 spots to No. 8.

MSSU is in the top 10 for the first time since the beginning of the USTFCCCA rankings in 2010.

No. 9 Southwest Baptist (70.64) fell three spots from a week ago, while No. 10 Texas A&M-Kingsville (69.36) returned to the top 10 after falling completely out of the rankings last week without any 2014 marks to score.

Women’s No. 1 Lincoln (Mo.) scored a dual-meet win over No. 2 Grand Valley State, 141-132, at GVSU to headline this past weekend’s action, but even with the win the Blue Tigers saw their lead over the Lakers in the rankings slip to just seven team rankings points.

Both squads saw their team rankings scores decrease with action going on elsewhere around the nation, with Lincoln falling 28.29 points to a team rankings score of 184.10 and GVSU with a less-severe 17.67-point decline to 177.69.

Where Lincoln and GVSU fell, No. 3 Adams State rose and is now within 13 points of the Blue Tigers and six of the Lakers after a 18.75-point improvement to 171.90. Already the second-ranked sprinter at 400 meters, Kayon Robinson added the Division’s second-fastest 200 meters time to resume to boost the Grizzlies.

Ashland remained No. 4, but suffered a 28.52-point decrease to its team rankings score, which settled at 121.03.

National Athlete of the Week Danielle Williams of No. 5 Johnson C. Smith posted Division-leading times at both 200 meters and in the 60-meter hurdles – as well as a leg of the third-ranked 4×400 relay – to lead her Golden Bulls to a team rankings score of 116.52, up 36.58 from a week ago.

No. 6 New Mexico Highlands (65.89) moved up a spot from last week, while No. 7 Angelo State (64.36) improved 21 positions, No. 8 Southwest Baptist (60.23) went up 17 spots, No. 9 Metro State (58.41) jumped 26 notches, and No. 10 Minnesota Duluth increased its rank by nine slots.

All of the aforementioned teams between No. 6 and No. 10 either set or tied their best rank since the beginning of the USTFCCCA rankings in 2010.

National Team Computer Rankings will be complied by mathematical formulae based on national descending order lists.

However, only marks from the current season will be used in subsequent rankings.

The purpose and methodology of the rankings is to create an index that showcases the teams that have the best potential of achieving the top spots in the national team race. Rankings points do not equate with NCAA Championships team points. A full description of the rankings can be found here.

USTFCCCA National Team Computer Rankings should not be referred to as a "poll” as no voting occurs during the process.
