SEATTLE – The California Golden Bears closed out the University of Washington Invitational at Dempsey Indoor Facility in Seattle on Saturday with one individual event title, and several other Bears set or matched personal bests in various events. Sophomore Grace Beaudoin claimed the women’s high jump title with a jump that cleared 5-7.00, a mark just shy of her personal best. Fellow sophomore Tara Lookabaugh set a new PR in the same event, while Noel Frazier equaled his career-best mark with a clearance of 7-0.25 in the men’s high jump, finishing third. Victoria Rische also PR’ed in the women’s pole vault with a jump of 12-11.75.

“The vertical jumps were outstanding today with many seasonal and career bests,” said Director of Track & Field Tony Sandoval on Saturday afternoon. “Victoria PR’ed in the pole vault, Grace performed very well, Noel tied his career best in the high jump, and Chioma threw much more consistently in both the weight throw and shot. I’m pleased with the progress in one week with those who competed this weekend in Seattle.”

Beaudoin set her PR last year at the Stanford Invitational in Palo Alto (5-7.25) in late March, and came up just short of that today. It was enough however to win the event, and finish just ahead of her teammate Lookabaugh, who posted a new PR with a mark of 5-5.00, tying for second with three other competitors.

Frazier, a San Ramon native, tied his own personal best that was set last year at the outdoor Pac-12 Championships in May. Senior Nick Ridge cleared a mark of 6-10.25 and finished tied for fifth place in the event, with Washington senior A.J. Maricich.

Rische cleared a mark of 12-11.75 in women’s pole vault Saturday afternoon, and nearly cleared her next attempt of 13-6.00. She topped her previous career-best mark of 12-11.00 at the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Championships last year at Dempsey Indoor on Feb. 23.

Junior Chioma Amaechi fell short in her quest to defend the women’s shot put title from the UW Invitational a year ago, finishing fourth with a throw of 49-6.25 on her second attempt. The San Francisco native and school record-holder in the weight throw also posted a mark of 63-4.00 in that event, placing third on Friday night.

“The competition will be intense in a couple of weeks as the team is splitting up between the Don Kirby in New Mexico and a return to Seattle for the Husky Invitational,” Sandoval added. “We look to add to the list of ranked bests in both meets.”

The Golden Bears return to action on Friday, Feb. 14 when they send a split squad to the Husky Indoor Classic back in Seattle and the Don Kirby Elite Indoor Invitational in Albuquerque, N.M.
