Americans pick up six wins in Zurich

INDIANAPOLIS - With the 2012 track and field season coming to an end, Americans won six events at the Zurich Diamond League meet today in Switzerland. Three U.S. athletes also capped their seasons with overall Diamond League Series titles.

Dawn Harper clinched the Diamond League series win with her first place finish of 12.59 in the 100m hurdles. Harper ends the season with 16 points and five series wins for the year. Americans swept the top four places in the race with Queen Harrison second in 12.68, Kellie Wells third in 12.69 and Ginnie Crawford fourth in 12.73.

Sanya Richards-Ross came off of the curve in the women’s 400m sitting in third place, but with a strong charge for the finish she surged to the front to win in 50.21. Amantle Montsho was second in 50.33 and Rosemarie Whyte was third in 50.41. Americans Francena McCorory (51.09) and Dee Dee Trotter (52.14) were fifth and seventh, respectively. Richards-Ross finished second overall for the Diamond League Series behind Montsho.

Reese Hoffa clinched the Diamond League season title with his victory in the men’s shot put Wednesday, which was held within the confines of a Zurich train station. Hoffa, the 2012 Olympic bronze medalist, claimed the competition with a throw of 21.64m/71-0 to finish ahead of fellow American Ryan Whiting, who placed second at 21.49m/70-6.25. The two bested a field that included 2012 Olympic champion Tomasz Majewski of Poland, who placed third.

Angelo Taylor grabbed the win in the men’s 400m hurdles in a time of 48.29. Taylor, a two-time Olympic gold medalist in the event, bested a field that also included reigning Olympic champion Felix Sanchez of the Dominican Republic, who placed fourth. Reigning Olympic silver medalist Michael Tinsley placed seventh in 49.56.

The U.S. team of Darvis ‘Doc’ Patton, Wallace Spearmon, Tyson Gay and Ryan Bailey put together a well-executed relay to win the 4x100m relay in 38.02. The relay squad’s of Jamaica (38.19) and Great Britain (38.30) finished second and third respectively.

Christian Taylor’s runner-up performance in the triple jump (17.16m/56-3.75) was enough to protect his lead in the overall Diamond League standings as he dominated the season with 19 points. Frabrizio Donato of Italy took first in Zurich to give him a second place finish for the season with eight points.
