Seaman, Vaill named outstanding U.S. Race Walkers of the Year

INDIANAPOLIS - USA Track & Field has announced that Tim Seaman and Teresa Vaill have been named the 2009 recipients of the Captain Ron Zinn Awards that honor the outstanding U.S. male and female race walkers of the year. Formal presentation of the awards will take place December 5 in ceremonies held in conjunction with USATF's Annual Meeting in Indianapolis.

These awards commemorate the achievements of Capt. Ron Zinn, who lost his life in combat during the Vietnam War. Zinn was a member of the U.S. Olympic Team during the 1964 Summer Games in Tokyo, and his sixth-place finish in the 20 km event is one of America's all-time top international race walking performances.

This year's men's winner is two-time Olympian Tim Seaman, who won the USA men's 20 km title for the sixth time in his career, and he also dominated the USA Race Walk Grand Prix. In winning the USA 30 km title on October 18, Seaman captured his 41st career U.S. race walk crown. Only National Track & Field Hall of Famers Ron Laird (65) and Henry Laskau (42) own more national race walk titles in U.S. history than Seaman. A resident of San Diego, Calif., Seaman was also the recipient of the Ron Zinn Award in 2000, 2002, 2004 and 2005.

2004 Olympian Teresa Vaill won the U.S. women's 20 km race walk title for the sixth time of her career in 2009, and also finished atop the overall USA Race Walk Grand Prix standings for women. A resident of Tallahasse, Fla., Vaill was also the recipient of the Ron Zinn Award in 1994, 1995, 2004, 2005 and 2007.

Barron, Chin win Laskau Awards

Trevor Barron and Allison Chin have been named the 2009 recipients of the Henry Laskau Awards, presented annually to the top Junior (19 and younger) race walkers in the U.S.

Barron and Chin, both 17-years old, dominated the junior scene in their respective gender during the 2009 season. Both individuals won the two major race walk competitions on U.S. soil for juniors, the Americas Race Walk Cup Trials in Pharr, Texas, and the USATF Junior Nationals in Eugene, Ore.

Barron, a member of the South Park Track Club near Pittsburgh, Pa., went on to finish fourth at the IAAF World Youth Championships in Italy in an American record time, one of three new American junior records he demolished during 2009.

A resident of Dayton, Ohio, and member of the Miami Valley Track, Allison Chin placed ninth at the Americas Race Walk Cup in El Salvador, finished fifth at the Junior Pan Am Games in Trinidad and roared to a new personal best time with a second place finish at the annual USA vs Canada Junior Dual.

Salvage named Riban Award winner

Race organizer, photographer, and writer, Jeff Salvage of Philadelphia has been named the 2009 winner of the Mike Riban Award for outstanding contributions to race walking in the U.S. by an individual. Salvage has tirelessly contributed to race walking thru his coverage of national and international competitions and the production of numerous books on coaching. A Quick Guide to Race Walking is his latest work in this area.

The Mike Riban Award for outstanding contributions by a USATF Association will be awarded to the South Texas Association, which strongly supported the 2009 Junior Camp and played host to the Americas Race Walk Cup Trials.
