PACIFIC-10 CONFERENCE OUTDOOR TRACK AND FIELD ATHLETES OF THE WEEK
WALNUT CREEK, Calif. -- Pacific-10 Conference outdoor track and field athlete of the week honors for the week of
April 20-26:
Men’s Track Athlete of the Week: MICHAEL COE, CALIFORNIA (So., Lompoc, Calif.) - At the Brutus Hamilton
Invitational, Coe broke the school record in the mile and set the fastest collegiate, U.S. and third-fastest time in the
world this season with a time of 3:56.18. Coe surpassed David Torrence’s record time of 3:58.62 for the school record.
Torrence took second in the race at 3:57.04. The previous NCAA-best time was 4:01.38 and the previous best U.S. time
was 3:58.90. That time converts into a nation-leading 3:37.98 at 1500 meters.
Men’s Field Athletes of the Week: ASHTON EATON, OREGON (Jr., Bend, Ore.) - Eaton won the decathlon Friday
at the Oregon Relays by scoring a nation-leading 8,023 points. It was Eaton’s third straight decathlon of 8,000 points
or better, going back to the NCAA Championships last June (8,055) and the U.S. Olympic Trials (8,122). Eaton is the
defending Pac-10 and NCAA decathlon champion, as well as the 2009 NCAA indoor heptathlon champion. Eaton set
a personal best in the 110 hurdles (14.08) and the high jump (6-8.75). He also neared lifetime bests in the 100 meters
(10.66), 400 meters (47.25), long jump (24-10.5), discus (125-7) and javelin (176-2).
Women’s Track Athlete of the Week: KIMYON BROOM, CALIFORNIA (Jr., Inglewood, Calif.) - At the Brutus Hamilton
Invitational, Broom set the school record in the 100-meter hurdles. Her time of 13.08 surpassed her previous
school record-setting time of 13.17, which she set in the prelims at the Pac-10 Championships last year. The time currently
leads the Pac-10 and ranks seventh in the NCAA this season.
Women’s Field Athlete of the Week: RACHEL YURKOVICH, OREGON (Sr., Newberg, Ore.) - Yurkovich defended
her Oregon Relays title in the women’s javelin with a throw of 186-5 (56.82). Yurkovich is the defending NCAA champion,
and the three-time defending Pac-10 champion. Her mark of 190-11 (58.20), set March 27, currently ranks second
on the national season-best list.
