I competed in track and cross country at Lincoln High School in 1956-1958. The AAA Championship meets were held in Kezar Stadium in Golden Gate Park, the home of the San Francisco 49ers. The 220, 440, 660, and 880 yards were run on a straightaway starting back in the tunnel under the stadium. It was a cinder track. My brother Stanley, who competed in 1952, still has the scars on his back to prove it.
Herb Blanchard (Polytechnic 1957) was a teacher and coach at McAteer High School.
Mike Lewis (Lincoln 1957), Occidental College 1962 BS, Director Confidential Stress Unit, EAP, San Francisco Fire Department. He coached Olympic throwers at the College of San Mateo. He set a San Francisco Section shot put record of 60-09.25 in 1957, which has stood for 51 years.
Bill Morgan (Lowell 1957), who went to San Francisco State, placed third in the AAU six-mile in San Diego on June 27, 1965.
1. Billy Mills (USA) 27:11.6 NEW WORLD RECORD
2. Gerry Lindgren (USA) 27:11.6
3. Bill Morgan 28:33.8
4. Doug Rustad 28:44.0
5. Jerry Smartt 29:33.4
6. Gar Williams 29:33.4
7. Ed Winrow 29:47.4
Morgan was lapped by Mills and Lindgren. A group of photographers came on the track to record the world record finish. Morgan had to run wide around them.
Ed Costa (Lincoln 1957) went on to BYU.
Ed Tank (Lincoln 1958) was an Inspector for the San Francisco Police Department.
Leonard Mentzer (Lincoln 1958) was a lawyer and lives in Piedmont.
