Cox named Athlete of the Week
INDIANAPOLIS - Josh Cox has been named USA Track & Field's Athlete of the Week after setting an American record in the men's 50 km race held in conjunction with P.F. Chang's Rock ' Roll Marathon Saturday in Phoenix, Ariz.

A three-time Olympic Trials qualifier in the marathon, Cox crossed the line in 2 hours 47 minutes 17 seconds, smashing the previous record by over four minutes. The former record of 2:51:48 was set by Alex Tilson in Palo Alto, Calif. in 2002.

In a race where Cox had to overcome two bathroom breaks and an upset stomach, which plagued him over the first 20 miles of the race, his marathon split of 2:20:32 was his best time since 2007 and would have placed him ninth overall. After running the final five miles on a 400m track, his last lap was clocked at 71 seconds.

Now in its eighth year, USATF's Athlete of the Week program is designed to recognize outstanding performers at all levels of the sport. USATF names a new honoree each week and features the athlete on the USATF website. Selections are based on top performances and results from the previous week.

2009 USATF Athlete of the Week Winners: January 6, Mason Finley; January 13, Amber Campbell; January 20, Josh Cox.
