Relatively Quiet Week In NCAA DIII XC Regional Rankings

Relatively Quiet Week In NCAA DIII XC Regional Rankings

NEW ORLEANS — With a little more than one month remaining until the NCAA Division III Cross Country Regional Championships, the Regional Rankings were surprisingly quiet this week.
That’s not because there weren’t a plethora of big meets in which teams could test themselves. Instead, most of those top-ranked teams in each of the 16 regions (eight men’s, eight women’s) handled business.
QUICK LINKSRegional Rankings Summary PDF | Men’s Rankings | Women’s Rankings | Rankings Central
In the most recent Regional Rankings released Tuesday by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches’ Association (USTFCCCA), there was only one new No. 1 team and zero new additions to the all-important top-2 of each region.
The Loras men are the new No. 1 team, located in the Central Region. The Duhawks overtook previous No. 1 St. Olaf thanks to their performance at the Carleton-hosted Running of the Cows. Loras captured the team title with a total of 42 points, compared to runner-up Gustavus Adolphus‘ total of 128. The Duhawks went 2-4-6-12-18 and did so without Timothy Sevcik, their top runner from last year’s regional meet.
Gustavus Adolphus is a common opponent for both Loras and St. Olaf. With the Duhawks winning by 86 points and the Oles only winning by 19 earlier this season, Loras became a shoo-in for the top spot.
Just because there wasn’t much movement in the top half of the rankings, doesn’t mean there weren’t many new additions.
In the men’s rankings, Ithaca and Rochester (N.Y.) joined the fun in the Atlantic Region, DePauw made its way into the Great Lakes Region, Eastern Mennonite is ranked in the South/Southeast Region, Saint Vincent and Muhlenberg were welcomed to the rankings in the Mideast Region and UC Santa Cruz and Whitworth are ranked in the West Region.
In the women’s rankings, RIT is now ranked in the Atlantic Region, UW-Platteville is ranked in the Midwest, Luther is ranked in the Central, both John Carroll and Manchester are tabbed in the Great Lakes, while Moravian and Gettysburg are listed in the Mideast Region.
The NCAA Division III Cross Country Regional Championships will be held across the nation on November 12. Exactly one week later, those top-2 teams, at-large teams and select individuals will converge on E.P. "Tom" Sawyer Park in Louisville, Kentucky for the 2016 NCAA Division III Cross Country Championships.
