SOUTH BEND, Ind. --- A busy weekend for the California cross country teams began in exceptional fashion Friday afternoon at the Joe Piane Notre Dame Invitational. Both Golden Bear teams competing finished their respective races in the team top ten and with two top 20 individual performances.

In the first race of the day – the Women's Blue 5K – Cal finished ninth overall out of 23 teams with a total time of 1:25.09. Junior Bethan Knights led the Golden Bears' efforts with a third place showing of 16:21.8. It was the second time in as many meets that Knights was the standard bearer for the Cal contingent, adding to her fourth place finish at the USF Invitational meet in early September.

"We had a good first road trip as a team," said Knights. "I was happy with my results and the team's performance. We all learned a lot from the race and it has all of us motivated to train. I believe we still have lots more to come this season."

Sophomore Marissa Williams joined Knights in the individual top 20 with a time of 16:44.7. Williams also repeated her team placement from USF as Cal's second fastest performer behind Knights.

The Cal men nearly matched the women's place for place in the Men's Blue 5 Mile event. The Bears finished eighth overall out of 25 with a team time of 2:01.47. Sophomore Robert Brandt and redshirt junior Trent Brendel both finished in the top 10, with Brandt clocking a third place time of 23:50.9 and Brendel finishing ninth with a mark of 23:56.5. The pair swapped places with each other from the USF meet, where Brendel and Brandt ended the race 1-2 overall.

"Overall it was a great race to get [the heart of] our season started. There is still work to be done but I think there is a lot of potential for this team as we get closer to the championship races," Brandt said.

The remaining Bears competing this weekend will take part in tomorrow's Sacramento State Capital Cross Challenge, beginning at 9:30 a.m.
