USF Women Capture Fourth Straight WCC Title; Men Finish Fourth

Eva Krchova Clips Elena Burkard to Win Indivividual Title

PORTLAND, Ore. -- USF's women's cross country team placed five runners in the top 10, led by individual winner Eva Krchova, en route to capturing its fourth straight West Coast Conference championship on Saturday morning at Fernhill Park in Portland, Ore.

Jose Madera paced the USF's men's team to a fourth place finish behind first place Portland, BYU and Gonzaga.

With 26 points, USF women's team easily outdistanced Portland (52) to capture its fourth straight title under head coach Helen Winters-Lehman. With today's victory, the cross country team becomes the first USF women's program to capture four straight conference championships in any sport.

Krchova outdueled teammate Elena Burkard down the stretch, as the junior captured the individual title with a time of 20:35 on the 6K course. Burkard, a freshman, was right behind at 20:36. Alice Baker (6th; 20:40), Laura Suur (7th; 20:43) and Chloe Treleven (10th; 20:53) rounded out USF's top-10 finishers.

Junior Maor Tiyouri narrowly missed a top-10 finish, placing 11th with a time of 20:57. Sophomore Kate Jambortez finished 30th (21:39) while junior Sarah Pearson (22:16) and senior Hilary Kigar (22:33) finished 41st and 47th, respectively.

In a thrilling men's race, Portland wrestled the team title back from BYU by the narrowest of margins, as the Pilots finished with 32 points to the Cougars 33. BYU's Jared Ward captured the individual title with a time of 23:42, but Portland was able to place three runners in the top five to win and all five in the top 13 to claim the team title.

USF was edged by Gonzaga for third place, as the Dons finished with 105 points to the Bulldogs 103, thanks to Tate Kelly's 11th place finish.

Madera's time of 24:21 was good for 15th place, just ahead of teammates Steven Garboden (24:22) and Ganbileg Bor (24:24). Freshman Eric Causey placed 25th with a time of 24:46.

Jarrett Moore (32nd; 25:13), Charlie Johansen (25:57; 25:57) and Nick Hicks (43rd; 26:13) rounded out the list of USF runners.

Both teams will compete at the NCAA West Regionals, set for Friday, Nov. 9.
