Olympic sprinter John Carlos to speak in Oakland

Carlos, 67, will appear at the Game Changers & Bridge Builders awards luncheon from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Oakland Marriott City Center.

San Jose State plans to acknowledge Carlos on Saturday during halftime of the Spartans-Utah State game. After the game he is scheduled to sign his book, "The John Carlos Story, The Sports Moment That Changed the World," at the Simpkins Stadium Center. A portion of the proceeds from book sales will benefit the San Jose State men's and women's cross-country teams.

Carlos also will participate in a photo opportunity at 1:15 p.m. Wednesday in front of a statute on San Jose State's campus that commemorates the salute. A book signing is scheduled to follow nearby.
