Garrett, Berkeley Named to USA Bobsled Team
Former Cal Track & Field Runners to Compete on Upcoming World Cup Circuit
Oct. 25, 2012
BERKELEY - Two former Cal track & field athletes - Cherrelle Garrett and Charles Berkeley - have been named to the 2012-13 U.S. national bobsled team and will compete on the upcoming World Cup circuit.
Garrett is a newcomer to bobsled, having just recently taken up the sport. On Oct. 5, she finished third at the U.S. push championships in Lake Placid, N.Y., placing ahead of Olympic heptathlete Hyleas Fountain, who was fourth. A 100-200-meter sprinter for the Golden Bears, Garrett ranks second in Cal history with a time of 11.38 seconds in the 100 meters from the 2009 season.
Berkeley is a veteran of bobsled and was a member of the USA2 four-man team at the 2010 Olympics in Vancouver. The sled crashed on its second of four runs and did not place in the final standings. Berkeley ran the 400 meters for the Bears in 1999 and 2000.
Several other push athletes for the bobsled team also have track & field backgrounds, including 2012 Olympians in hurdler Lolo Jones and sprinter Tianna Madison.
