INDIANAPOLIS - Sarah Baxter (Simi Valley, Calif.) has been named USA Track & Field’s Athlete of the Week after setting a course record at the Mt. SAC cross country invitational in a blazing time of 16:00 for 2.93 miles.
The high school junior bested the previous record of 16:16 set in 2001 by Amber Trotter. Trotter’s record seemed untouchable as it sat on the record books for more than a decade, with previous efforts from Jordan Hasay and Marie Lawrence falling more than ten seconds short of the record.
Baxter won her third consecutive Mt. SAC invitational as she beat her nearest competitor by more than a minute and 20 seconds. Her record also gives her three of the top ten times ever run on the Mt. SAC course, and she maintained her impressive record of winning every high school cross country race she has run.
Now in its 11th year, USATF’s Athlete of the Week program is designed to recognize outstanding performers at all levels of the sport. USATF names a new honoree each week and features the athlete on www.usatf.org. Selections are based on top performances and results from the previous week.
